Pug Dog Encephalitis Resource

Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) is a fatal disease that only affects pugs.  Village of Hope is a great resource completely devoted to educating others about PDE and raising money to research this deadly disease.  Village of Hope is a great place to start in finding out more about Pug Dog Encephalitis or to connect with others who have witnessed first-hand the affects of this disease.

My pug Oliver just got diagnosed with pug dog encepalitis 2 weeks ago.  He is our baby and it breaks my heart to know he wont live long. Right now we are just loving him as much as possible. I am trying to be possitive, but everything I read about the disease makes it hard to think possitive.

My pug Rocky just came down with PDE I was so surprised how fast it hit and how little is known about it. 23 days into this disease and he is in terrible shape. the vet first thought it was just epilisy. by day 2 the other symptoms appeared circling, head pressing and blindness in 1 eye. he is at home now but is not expected to last very long as the meds aren’t controlling the seizures well i will miss him very very much.

My pug was diagnosed with pde 2 months ago after a cluster seizure she had (was a horrifying thing to watch). She’s on anti-seizure meds. Which are working, though she is pretty blind and I noticed the past couple days she’s been getting up at 12 midnight and pacing and vomiting.

Does anybody know if this is another symptom of whats to come? I also would like to know what are the progressive symptoms of the final stages of pde?

We lost our sweet Bentley this morning after being diagnosed with pug encephalitis just hours before.  He went from a happy fun loving puppy to a dog that couldn’t walk or stand and was in severe pain.

This is a terrible disease for the wonderful loving animials

My loving angel, Lucy lu, was diagnosed, treated, and died over 3 years ago from PE.  She had a litter of 6 puppies one month before her first seizure.  The vet said that there was no way to predict if the puppies would be infected-I am sad to say that exactly 3 years to the day I found out that one of the puppies is surely infected.  I am so scared that the other pups will have to go through the same fate as Lucy lu.  I kept two pups from the litter and I can’t bear to go through PE again.  I need to know if all the pups will be infected because one of them is displaying the symtoms????

My little guy, Tiny Tim just suddenly came down with PDE the other day, and I had to have him put to sleep, all in one day.  If he showed any symptoms before, I didn’t notice them.  We loved him and miss him, but I have a real problem, because he is the father of a litter of pups that are going to be born this coming week.  He’s also fathered two other litters.  I feel really bad about it, and hope the people they went to won’t have to go through it with their doggies.  Don’t really know what I should do with the babies that are coming!  Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

I would like to know an answer to that same question, because my male Tiny Tim has had two litters, and My female Anabel is going to have another any minute.  Tiny Tim suddenly came down with PDE three days ago and had to be put to sleep.  I don’t want anyone else who loves their Pug to have to go through it.

Hi, I’m new to this site and wondering if anyone could tell me if what my dog is experiencing is congruent with PDE.  The vets think it is, but it doesn’t seem to completely identify with the symptoms .  She has not had any seizures, but within two months she has had two episodes where she had difficulty walking (dizzy acting), was incontinent with urine, and bobbed her head.  Both times she was treated with steroids and responded well.  Any ideas?

My little guy Rufus hs had some issues lately, he has been waking up in the early morning pacing and getting sick. This does not happen everyday, prob every couple of days. He also has been crying and circling (as if he was chasing his tail)at the same time and stretching out while crying. We have looked into everything from X-rays/ ultrasound, etc with nothing being found. My vet seems to think that this is PDE, and he is supposed to get in for an MRI as soon as possible. I am just wondering that if anyone with experience with PDE has seen these kind of symptoms before.  He is in perfect health and mind 70% of the time and I am worried sick that this may take his life.

Thanks

We have lost our beloved Zazie-baby three weeks ago.. PDE took her from us very rapidly: she was dead within 24 hrs!

I’m afraid, Derrick, that the symptoms you describe are very much resemble the ones we had to see in the first 3 hrs and then everything went from bad to worse… The whole thing is so surreal and painful… All you can do now is to contribute to the research and perhaps you can help to detect the cause of PDE. I wish I didn’t have to write all these to you…

We had to put our baby Bristol down today.  He was diagnosed with PDE 2 weeks ago.  Watching him go downhill before our eyes was horrible.  We are allowing his body to be used for research because we do not want anyone else to have to watch what we had to.  We will miss him more than words can express!!!!!!!!!!!!

I lost my pug Stormy of Pug Dog Encephalitis
on 10/10/07. She was 1 year and 11 months old. It has been such a hard thing to get thru. She got so sick so fast. It took a very long time to get a diagnosis due to the fact most of the tests come back normal. We spent over $5000 trying to save her life to no avail. So that her dead wasn’t in vain we opted to have slides of her brain taken. So along with the MRIs, blood work etc. maybe they can help find a cure for this devastating illness. So in a way our Stormy is a hero! We love you our sweet angel! R.I.P Amanda’s Stormy Lady 11/06/05 ~~ 10/10/07

Only way to make a difinitive diagnosis of this disease is by autopsy and microscopic examinayion of the nervous system, this must be done by individuals experienced in veterinary neuropathology, which usally means at a college of Veterinary medicine.
I amso sorry for any one that has lost a Pug, but other things that will speed the heart rate can also cause swelling of the brain. Hope this has helped.

We lost our little girl, Pugzy 2 days ago to Pug Encephalitis.  Originally we thought she hurt her back and the Vet put her on steriods oral steroids after 3 injections, she got better for a week and a few days, but once the oral steroids wore off, she went downhill fast.  She passed away at the Vets office 5 minutes or so before we got there.  He thought she was poisoned by some insecticide, but we think it was PE.  She responded with steroids for a limited time, and she displayed all the symptoms, lazness, lameness(abnormal walk), apparent blindness, seizures, circling, vacant expressions, and pressing her head against things.  This all happened very fast once she was off the steroids, she went from moderatley ok to death with in 24 hours.  It’s a terrible disease and I miss my little girl so much I can barely stand it.

I lost my Sammy yesterday.  He started back in May not jumping off the furniture.  I went to two vets and they put him on steroids and he was doing much better until August he had a grandmal seizure and they put him on phenobarbitol and steroids every time they took him off the steroids he started to go downhill.  He was never diagnosed with PDE but I believe he had it and yesterday I put him down becuase he was having seizures every couple of days and he was circling but I couldn’t get anything out of the vet so I am very disappointed and I would like to suee a cure for this as well.  I am convinced he had this disease.

I have a four month old pug that recently started displaying odd behavior. She began to pace, drool excessively, run into walls, furniture, attack and bark at inanimate objects. I was just wondering if she was too young to be diagnosed with PDE. We went to the Vet and found she had a high temp. and very high liver enzymes. She was put on an antibiotic and now displays those behaviors very rarely. Maybe just for a few minutes when she gets worked up. What do you think? Do you think that she could have PDE? Is she too young.

Jim

02/06/2008

Hi Lauren,

High temp and high liver enzymes indicate something else, maybe a shunt (blood bypassing the liver), maybe some other infection. Get the little one re-inspected and diagnosed by the vet and let us know—what you said does not match what I know of this disease (though I’m not a vet, just someone who is worried his little girl might have PDE).

I have just read everybody’s comments. My sweet pug baby, Miso died just yesterday, from what had to be PDE. Her birthday was 8-20-06, so she was not even 2 years old. It is such a sad a lonely feeling, seeing your best friend go so quickly. We thought she had hurt her back too, she did not want to jump off furniture, was super lethargic, and just not herself. So after a day of treating her for her back, her neck became very stiff, and then she could hardly walk, as all her limbs were limp. She kept going potty in her crate for a couple days, as well as not eating or drinking, and her health declined so quickly. Then she began having seizures, she had 7 in about 2 hours. The next day, we got to take her home from the vet and have one last good snuggle. When we were snuggling, she began having sever difficulties breathing, like she was hacking and coughing. thick drooling. It was just like that. Everything reminds me of her, every time I hear a noise i expect her to look or move, it is so painful but I am just glad she did not have to suffer for long. She was my very best friend, and I feel for everybody who has/is/will go through this. I love my Miso baby, she is my pug angel and now I get to be with her everyday, everywhere I go, as she will always be in my heart.

Just found out about PDE and may be overreacting a bit but the little guy will on occasion press his head to my ankles and the couch.  No other signs and I’m hoping this is just normal attention getting behavior.  Wish I had known about PDE before but I wouldnt trade him for the world.

my sisters pug is in the process of trying to find out what is wrong with her…vomited, excessive drool for hours after, walking in to things, wobbly head, seizures, right sided weakness that has remained…specifically her right front leg, disoriented.  phenobarbital has controlled the seizures so far….PDE is what we think it will be…anyone know of any herbal/holistic measures that are successful?

I have a pug named abbie shes about 2.5 years old and 2 days ago she had a very werid thing happen to her her head went down she started to breath heavy and her back rose up she did it twice in one day has’nt done it since. put i fear the worst for this pug she can’t really hear anymore but we knew since we took her in for her frist check up that her ears were very bad. so sympthons are that she seemed to pace around hunch back and hard breathing neck seemed to be inflamed also.

Our little boy Howie Noodles passed away this past December from PDE.  He was only 1 yr old.  He started out arching his back and having trouble walking.  We brought him to the vet and they gave him anti-inflammatory meds but they didn’t really help.  He started getting real lathargic and sleeping more.  After another week we took him to the emergency animal hospital because he was shaking and we couldn’t keep him warm.  He had a seizure there and then then we brought him to the Philadephia veterinary hospital were they took care of him and performed tests.  He was diagnosed with PDE and we had to put him down within a few days because of the seizures.  This was so tough to deal with and probably the hardest day of our lives.  PDE took him in only 2 weeks and came out of the blue.  I feel for anyone else that has dealt with this horrible disease.  We are looking at getting another pug in the next few months but are a little scared of this happening again.

I’ve always been a big dog lover until my wife convinced me to pruchase Winston.  We now have 3 Pugs and they have totally captured my heart for all the reasons you know.  One of the Pugs, Baxter showed seizure symptoms 2 days ago.  We learned it is PDE and are absolutely heartbroken to put him down to avoid severe pain & poor quaity of life in his final days.  The solution will come in education and research support.  Stay involved and informed against this wicked disease.

I previously wrote a post asking for info about this disease as my vet had diagnosed my pooch Rufus with this disease. I would recommend that as horrible as it is that you do not jump too quickly to put your dog down as our pooch ws misdiagnosed. He has stomach issues which we take care of with simple antacid pills. We spent thousands of dollars trying to figure it out and were days away from putting him down, I suggest that everyone get 2nd or 3rd opinion before deciding to put part of their family down.

Best of luck to all

My baby D.D. is not doing well. She has had 2 seizures and is in puppy ICU. She is 1 and 1/2 years old. I am hoping for the best, but am very scared that it is PDE.  I will know more tomorrow. How can this be!.....
