Disinterested Pug With Found Objects
It would appear that Seattlelites love pugs. In fact, pugs are firmly seated at the middle of the top 10 dog breeds registered with the AKC in Seattle, WA. However, one disinterested Seattle pug has caught my eye of late. His name is Roscoe. He is your typical pug with handsome good looks except that he and his owner have a knack for spotting strange objects while out and about. Roscoe has a whole Flickr set called Disinterested Pug With Found Objects devoted to his findings. I can easily spend hours looking at Roscoe posing with all the things that have crossed his path.
Well, pug lovers, you really have perfected your scrapbooking skills! The Milwaukee Pug Fest received 69 outstanding entries for its scrapbooking contest and announced the winners of the contest earlier this week. The winning entries are listed below, but be sure to take a look at all the entries.

$100 to GMPR for submitting 32 outstanding 12 x 12 pages
A special donation of $50 to be directed to Pug Rescue of San Diego in memory of Mr. Bones. Mr. Bones (Braveheart, Billy Bones) was featured on Barbara McNair’s scrapbook page. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Feb 2nd, 2009. He was starved and suffered abuse that resulted in brain damage. He will not be forgotten in Milwaukee, San Diego and hopefully all the hearts that forever love the senior pug. Go in Peace, little Man!
A $25 donation will go to the following rescues for participating:
Being a football fan, I always enjoy Super Bowl Sunday. A few years back, I happened to stumble upon the Puppy Bowl on Animal Planet. After watching a few minutes of the “game” I was hooked and I have made sure to record it every year since.
This year is Puppy Bowl V and it looks to be as exciting as ever. Check out the Puppy Bowl V site to see this year’s starting lineup. Kickoff time is set for February 1, 2009 at 3pm e/p on Animal Planet.

Pugfessions - A fun project with a big heart
Want an easy and fun way to get involved in animal rescue? If so, check out Pugfessions.
What exactly is a Pugfession, you ask? The Pugfessions themselves are decorated 4x6 postcards (or anything that’s about the size of a postcard, such as a photo or paper that you trim to size) that includes a “ Pug secret,” and ideally a photo or image of a Pug. And here’s the best part of all—$1.00 for every Pugfession received goes to Animal Haven(or the rescue group of your choice.. see website for details) to help shelter dogs-and WE give the money to the shelters.. the only thing you ever pay for is the postage stamp!
All you have to do is take a pic of your beloved pug and tell us your “Pugfession”—or maybe your Pug has a confession of his or her own? Break out your scrap-booking supplies if you have them, or make a Pugfession easily on the computer. You can even make Pugfessions with a photo and a Sharpie—simple! Check out www.Pugfessions.com for all the info on where to send them, sample Pugfessions, and more info about other “fessions” projects. Who knows—maybe your Pug will even become famous in a Pugfessions book? But that’s just a perk—it’s all for a good cause.

Oprah takes on Puppy Mills
When I got Benjamin & Henry I had no idea about the horror of puppy mills. I have since learned a lot about the horrendous breeding conditions that exist in puppy mills.
Pug lover Danielle wrote in to tell us about a few Pet Photo Contests going on at SnapFish. The contests are open to submissions until April 6, 2008 and then the voting begins. There are some pretty cool prizes up for grabs.
Best of luck pug lovers!

Pugfessions
Dogfession: noun; A confession concerning canines; a secret in your heart that you’d only share with your dog; or a secret you wouldn’t want your dog to ever find out!
Dogfessions is a fun website where dog lovers share some of their innermost doggie thoughts. But the submissions aren’t done via e-mail, they are done via good, old-fashion post cards. Yup, not only do you get to share you dogfession, but you get to show off your creativity and design your very own postcard with your personal dogfession. It doesn’t matter how creative you get, all that matters is your dogfession is a reflection of you. Once your post card is complete you send it off to the good people at Dogfessions and they’ll post it on their website (or if you are lucky, it may be in future Dogfession book).
What’s even better is that April & May are special pug themed months and they are looking for as many Pugfessions as they can get. Best of all, for each Pugfession submitted $1 will be donated to a pug rescue organization. The pug rescue organization benefiting from Pugfessions include:
I know I have plenty of Pugfessions to share! I hope you send in your Pugfessions too!

What’s in a name?
I came across an interesting article in USA Today about how the most popular names for dogs are names that have more of a human ring to it. Using their list of insured pets, Veterinary Pet Insurance came up with the top ten names of male and female dogs. The top three names for each gender are listed below.
Male
Max
Buddy
Rocky
Female
Bella
Molly
Lucy
So why have dog lovers ditched the traditional names like Spot and Buddy. Many believe it has to do with pets being more and more apart of our family. I tend to agree. Afterall, my boys are named Benjamin and Henry. And if we got to name Luna she would have had a more traditional human name too.

Pug Ingenuity
This video of a sly pug getting some extra treats for himself has been around for awhile, but it still makes me laugh every time I see it. So what better way to start off the work week than with a smile from some pug antics. Enjoy!

Pug Tattoo Tributes - Reader Picture

Pug Puppies Playing
It’s Wednesday and if the work week is already getting to you here is a little something to help you make it through hump day. A video of two 4 week old puppies playing. They are so young and utterly adorable.
My favorite part is when they both simultaneously fall over.

Pug Tattoo Tributes
The April Issue of Bark magazine features an article titled Indelible Dogs by Lisa Wogan. In the article, Wogan shows some tattoos that were inspired by lovable canine companions. Not surprisingly, some of those tatts were inspired by pugs. You can see two incredible pug tattoos on the Bark blog.
Do you have any ink honoring your pug?

Kitty Massage
This is definitely one of the cutest things I have seen in awhile.
Many people have the impression that pugs are not very active dogs. While this may be true of some pugs, it is certainly not true for them all. Check out Baxter, a pug that loves to go for hikes in the Rocky Mountains with his owner Allen Tiefenbach.
It is stories like these that prove that the pug is truly multum in parvo - a lot in a little.
Xylitol is found in many foods, but is commonly found in items like gum, breath mints, toothpaste and mouthwash. As the sugar substitute is becoming more popular it is appearing in more and more food items.
Stephanie Lam, Harley’s mom, hopes to raise awareness about xylitol and the dangers it poses to animals so that no one will have to go through what her and Harley experienced after he treated himself to a few breath mints.

Primetime Live: What People Are Talking About: Pugs
I came across this clip on YouTube from PrimeTime Live I believe from the Fall of 2007. I think the clip does a pretty good job of showing the spirit of the pug lover. My favorite line for the video is from Margo Kauffman,
“The pug owner has a predisposition for lunacy, otherwise you would not become enslaved to a dog that does nothing for you.”

Opposable Thumbs Day
Believe it or not, today is What if Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day. Hmmm. Benjamin, Henry & Luna seem to get in enough trouble without thumbs, I can’t imagine what would be like if they had thumbs. What do you think? How would your pug use thumbs?

Eco Dog
I was at the bookstore the other day when the book Eco Dog caught my eye. I picked it up and started flipping through it and after just glimpsing at a few pages I knew I would be buying this book.
Eco Dog is an easy to read book that focuses on healthy and natural living in all aspects of your dog’s life. I love how the book is very informative and yet so easy to read. Plus, each section of the book has little projects that you can tackle at home. From nutritious recipes for food and treats to ideas for making dog toys. There are several projects that I have bookmarked that I can’t wait to start. When I do them I will be sure to write about them on the Pug Blog.
If you are interested in learning more about a holistic approach to caring for your pug, Eco Dog is a great starting point. It is informative without being overwhelming and gives you a great base for further research.

Pugs & Mastiffs
A story about Lurch, a 200 pound Mastiff, that is going to be honored for donating blood 20 times caught my eye today. The first reason it stuck out to me is because you don’t hear much about canine blood donation. By donating blood about once every 4 weeks, Lurch has helped dozens of dogs. But what really stuck with me is Lurch’s other family members - another Mastiff, 4 pugs and 7 kitties. Lurch and Lucas, the other Mastiff of the house, team up and chow down about 200 pounds of kibble each month.
Lurch’s owner had this to say about Mastiffs, “Mastiffs are just like 200-pound pugs. They’re just as friendly and just as goofy except they have a couple more zeros at the end of the weight.”
I buy that. I know my gang sure does have the appetite of a Mastiff.
Many Americans will be watching Tom Brady’s Patriots take on Eli Manning and the Giants on Super Bowl Sunday, but don’t forget about the other big game on this weekend - Puppy Bowl IV.
If you have never seen a Puppy Bowl, you don’t know what you are missing. Puppies of all breeds are given total run of a football themed play area and all of their antics are caught on tape by the Animal Planet cameras.
There doesn’t appear to be a pug in this year’s starting lineup, but if you are a dog lover you will want to tune in to catch at least a few minutes of Puppy Bowl IV.
Puppy Bowl IV airs on Animal Planet on Sunday, February 3, 2008 and starts at 3pm.
When dog collars are part of lot that will be auctioned off for $3,000 at Bonhams in New York, it is pretty easy to tell that these aren’t any ordinary pug collars. No, these collars once were worn by the pugs owned by the Duke and Dutchess of Windsor. There are over 100 leather collars that are lavishly engraved. You can see a picture of one of the collars here.
The AKC recently released their annual breed registration statistics and while the Pug came in 14th overall in 2007, the pug breed was the fourth most registered dog in Portland, Oregon. That ranking is higher than any other of the 50 U.S cities that the AKC provided rankings for. So, a big woof to all those pugs out there in Portland! If you are interested, you can find out the most popular dog breeds in your city.

CPR on South Florida Today
Earlier this week, Compassionate Pug Rescue took to the airwaves of South Florida to help raise awareness of pug rescue and to raise some much needed funds for their latest rescue Angel.
Animal Services contacted Compassionate Pug Rescue to let them know that they had just received a pug that had been hit by a car. Because of the severity of the young pug’s injuries, Animal Services would be forced to put down the pug. CPR swooped in and took the young pug from Animal Control and set off to get her the care that she needed for her injuries.
X-Rays revealed that Angel had an upper hip fracture, a fractured pelvic bone, and a left femur fractured in three different areas. It was determined that precious Angel would need two surgeries because the surgeon thought trying to fix everything at once was more than the sweet little girl could probably endure.
Angel’s first surgery was on August 3, 2007 and her second surgery was on August 6, 2007. Angel has a lot of physical therapy to undergo in the upcoming months, but the Dr.‘s prognosis for the future is very bright for sweet Angel.
As you can only imagine, the cost of Angel’s surgeries is much more than a small rescue organization can support. Now more than ever, CPR needs the support of Pug Lovers everywhere! A donation of any size goes a long way in helping to pay for Angel’s medical costs.
Thanks to CPR, Angel now has a whole life of pug living to do.
You can make a donation to the Compassionate Pug Rescue Angel Fund from Compassionate Pug Rescue’s Website. Donations can be made via PayPal or checks may be mailed directly to Compassionate Pug Rescue.
If you live in or around the Ohio area be sure to check out the Ohio Pug Rescue’s Fifth Annual Santa in September Fundraising Event on Saturday, September 15, 2007, at the Whitehall Community Park at 402 N. Hamilton Road, Columbus, Ohio, 43213 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is just $1 for those over 12 years old and children under 12 are free. There will be pug games, raffles and contests for people and pugs alike. Plus, the highlight of the event will be pictures with Santa! For a $5 donation your pug can have their photo taken with Santa!
Best of all, all money raised during the event will benefit the pugs of Ohio Pug Rescue.
Ahhh, the life of a pug. Here is an awesome, time-lapse video of two pugs catching up on their sleep. The stars of the video are Bijou & Moe and the video was captured from a web cam. You’ll see in the video that the pugs don’t want to show favoritism and they switch from bed to bed and Bijou doesn’t like to sleep alone so she makes sure she is always snuggled up to Moe.

Angel Goes to Work
Angel, the pug, took advantage of Take Your Dog to Work Day last Friday and spent the day with her Mom at the office. Not only did she have fun meeting all of her mom’s co-workers, but she was also interviewed by the local news station! Not bad for a day’s work! You can see Angel’s day at work here.

Don’t get me wrong, getting away from the daily grind is fantastic, but for me vacationing without my pugs in tow is not much fun. So I am always on the lookout for great vacation destinations that are also dog friendly. DogFriendly.com is a great resource for traveling with your pug and they just recently released this year’s list of the Top 10 Dog-Friendly Vacation Destination Cities in the United States and Canada. Here are the cities that made the list:
Boston - Take a boat or whale watching cruise. Walk the Freedom Trail, visit Salem and explore history at Minute Man Park. Your leashed dog is also welcome on the subway.
Vancouver - Walk the Capilano Suspension Bridge and park. Take a walking tour of Historic Gastown. Take the ferry and visit nearby Victoria and beautiful Butchart Gardens.
New York - Stay in luxury at many fine hotels. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Take a walking tour of lower Manhattan. Ride the carriages. Watch a morning show. Shop in many famous stores.
San Francisco - Luxurious hotels, outdoor dining, the Golden Gate Bridge, Baker Beach and many off-leash areas. Ride the cable car to the Fisherman’s Wharf area and stroll with your dog.
Austin - Visit Zilker Botanical Gardens, catch a horse and carriage ride, dine in outdoor cafes. See the bats leave the Congress St Bridge at dusk. Use the city’s many parks.

With the constant developments in the Pet Food Recall it is pretty hard to keep up to date with what food is safe and what is not. The FDA website is a great place to look for the most up to date information. In addition, they have also put together a searchable list of recalled pet foods.
Sheldon, is a cleverly current, daily comic strip written and drawn by Dave Kellett. The cast of characters includes a pug named Oso who is owned by 10-year-old Sheldon. It is apparent that Dave fully understand the oddities of pug behavior and his strips involving Oso are quite amusing.

ASPCA Pet Food Recall Resource Center
With new information being released everyday about the Menu Foods pet food recall it is hard to stay current and keep up with what is safe to feed your pug. The ASPCA has put together a great resource center that will help keep pug owners in the loop and answers many of the common questions pet owners have about the pet food recall.
Check it out and bookmark it. I have a feeling the Pet Food Recall Resource Center is going to be a vital resource for pet owners over the next few months.

Hill’s Recalls Prescription Diet m/d Feline Dog Food
The FDA found melamine in samples of the recalled pet food. Melamine is a chemical used to make plastics. It is also used as a fertilizer in Asia.
Melamine was also detected in the wheat gluten used as an ingredient in the tainted pet food.
FDA Officials confirmed that the contaminated wheat gluten was also shipped to a company that manufacturers dry pet food. The FDA Officials will not release the name of the company at this time as they cannot confirm if the company has used the wheat gluten.
Melamine was detected in the urine of cats that got sick after eating the recalled food and it was also found in the urine of one cat that died as a result of eating the tainted food.
Scientists do not have enough data on mammalian toxicity levels of melamine to conclude it caused the death or sickness of pets eating the contaminated food
FDA scientists did not find evidence of aminopterin in the samples they tested. Scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory found aminopterin in the samples they tested.

Menu Foods Recall - Helpful Links
A lot of information has been released about the Menu Foods pet food recall. I will do my best to keep an updated list of links here.
The Mega Millions lottery draw is up to a whopping $355 million. Needless to say, people are lining up to purchase what they hope is the winning ticket. The Mercury News, polled a few individuals on what they would do if they won and I just love Dan Orloff’s response:
“I’d retire and run a pug ranch,’’ he said. “Hundreds of little pugs running around can put a smile on just about anyone.”
Before yesterday’s big game, a game with equal importance was played, Puppy Bowl III. In case you have never seen it, the Puppy Bowl is non-stop action with puppies romping, chewing, running and playing in their water bowl all in a small arena. It will definitely make you smile. If you missed the Puppy Bowl here is a clip of the intro.
I stumbled across the site Pugcasso the other night and I completely fell in love with David King’s work. There are plenty of original artworks available for sale on his site. Many are pugs, but he also has beautiful pieces of other dog breeds.
Folks, we need your help. Our rescue box truck rolled into our Greensboro, NC headquarters tonight with 33 adult dogs from a confiscation in Wilson, North Carolina. We do not have a total headcount on all the PUPPIES yet, but we have them, and we have pregnant females.
Twenty of the dogs we picked up were pugs to add to the four he relinquished to us yesterday, one pug girl is in labor tonight. There are several more in various stages of pregnancy and some just bred and not showing yet. Pugs will be multiplying VERY fast here.
In addition, we have 5 or 6 mini schnauzers, one mom is nursing 5 tiny babies. We do not know yet how many more of them are pregnant.
We have 1 wunderwhat. He/she is either a Westie or a Wheaten. We’re not sure which yet.
We have 3 min pins…one pregnant and showing
We have a pregnant chi/min pin mix who will not come out of her crate and is possibly in whelp.
We have asked these other breed rescues to come help us take all but the pugs. We need help with the pugs as well. Anything you can do to help us will be deeply
appreciated.
