Ask OBP #11

Welcome back to Ask OBP. We have been asked by Christie if we sing songs to the pugs. And it was both comical and shocking to learn that a few of you sing the same song to your pugs! You are my pugshine has seemed to be a chart topper with our readers! That is amazing!

We can safely say that we pretty much have never sang lullabies to the pugs. Sorry to disappoint, but we were not part of the Pugshine bandwagon. Of course, there were a few obvious songs that we have sung to them, however. As you may recall, they were Benny and the Jets for Halloween one year. We would regularly screech out the wails of Elton John's popular tune. The pugs were not a fan of this, but Benny did seem to know it was all about him and it was ok with him if we were pitchy.

Another likely obvious song we would sing to Henry would be 'Enery the 8th. This was an oldie but goody. And even though it is now racially outdated and inappropriate, we used to belt the chorus of Brother Louie to Luna except we replaced Louie Louie Louie Louie with Looney Looney Looney Looney.

Most recently we have The Heart of Rock and Roll is Still Beating where we have updated the lyrics to be The Heart of Hanky Doo is Still Beating.

I must also confess, that I have a soft spot for Paula Abdul's Forever Your Girl. That's kind of a love song that Luna and I have to each other. The song is special because we always called Luna "girl" as in "Hey, Girl!" or "Hey, Girl, Hey!" And Luna was SO loyal that it just seems to fit.

A while back, when Benny, Henry and Luna were all youngsters, we made little video montages to You've Got a Friend in Me and You're My Best Friend. We also did one for Luna using Pretty Woman. So those songs stuck and we were know to serenade the pugs to one of those tunes now and then.

I realize that this means that Solsey never got a song of her own. If we were a member of the Pugshine club, we may have sang it but to the lyrics You are my Solshine. Sadly, this never, pardon the pun, dawned on us. #ba-dump-bum

Christie, you are a question workhorse out there! We love answering your questions. And Christie, we will answer the one about hair licking next week (sorry for the delay). Is anyone else going to follow Christie's lead and ask questions? Ask OBP can only live as long as we have something to answer. I know there has been a sprinkling of other questions, but you have to give it to Christie for carrying the team. #wink

This was really cute to read.  I am sad to say that I don’t serenade my puggie.  I love music very much, but our fav pastime is watching chick flicks (him.. not so much, he yawns and yawns. It is too funny, but he likes action/adventure stuff with dad… go figure smile  )
Love all the song references, you are all very clever!!

Tears flowed reading this post and seeing the whole gang together.  Oh how I miss them.

The videos/pictures accompanying the songs are priceless, almost as if they were acting out to the words.

I especially liked “Pretty Woman”.  Little Luna had the perfect moves to the words.

I assume you still make a weekly supply of food for Henry.  How is the new diet going and what do you do with all that room in the fridge?  You once posted a picture of the end result of cooking, and the fridge was packed with bowls.

Henry, you are my pugshine.  Don’t tell Annie, she would get jealous that I think of you as pugshine.  She is a very self centered little girl.

WELL, to say that I LOVED those videos would be an understatement…they were just beyond!!! I already associate Heart of Rock and Roll with Henry and now I will associate Pretty Woman with Looney:)

Oh…and I’m happy to be carrying the team…and on that note a question on potty etiquette. Did or do you clean your kidz after they go potty? After our kidz go potty we clean their paws, pug butts, tweeters, and yes the lone who ha with a baby wipe before letting them back in the house;) We buy the big box of baby wipes at Target and keep a pack by the front and patio doors.

What are you going to dress Hank up as this year?  And if you say a tank, expect WHOOP-WHOOPS from NH!  Get it, Hank the Tank!?!

Christie-  Thank you for carrying the team.  LOL.  I will not make you wait 2 full weeks to answer the potty question (plus even I could not make that a full blog #wink).  We only clean pug butts when they are dirty to the eye.  (And we call this situation “dirty butt” and it is typically cleaned by dabbing, not wiping with a tissue.)  This was a very common situation with Baby Benny.  Not so much with Luna or Henry.  Your kids sound much cleaner than ours!  Kudos!

Jenna-Ahem….you have asked a very unfair question….trying to trick or treat us into an early Halloween reveal?  We won’t be sharing early.  But I am sad to disappoint you by saying that he will not be Hank the Tank this year.  :(  Hopefully when you see him in all his adorableness this year, though, he will still get WHOOP WHOOP from NH.  We have his costume and it fits like a glove.  Let’s just say, his costume fits him in more ways than one (this year especially).

I absolutely loved watching all of your music videos starring our beloved OBP pugs!  Wonderful, sweet pictures and great music!  They’re all really touching!  I’m in the group who sings “You Are My Pugshine”, and I love that others agree that it’s a good choice for our pugs ♥

I actually sing to Bennie a lot.  Most of it is nonsense that I “compose” on the spot in a reaction to whatever is in my head at the moment.  Mark started playing the guitar about five years ago, and sometimes he’ll work on a song over and over, and what he’s working on right now is Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze.  Since I hear that a lot, I sing along to Bennie with lyrics that would probably surprise Jimi quite a bit.

We watch Jeopardy almost every night, and I also sing to Bennie with the Jeopardy Think Music.

ODP, what are your thoughts on adding to the grumble of one?  I lost both of my pugs and it’s been almost 4 years since I lost Sleighbelle (in November).  I have gone back and forth on getting another or two.  I miss having pugs in the house, but I just am so concerned (um, obsessed) with loosing them again that I’m hesitate to take the plunge. Thanks for your response and I always love seeing your posts, Christina

Sue VDB-I will post a reply about the new diet and the how we may or may not be filling our fridge any longer.  (But I can say going from 96 bowls a week to 21 does make a big difference.)
Since next week’s Ask OBP is already written, we appreciate your patience until the following week.  (We had to write ahead since we have a lot coming up in the next couple of weeks.)  Thanks for the question.

Thanks for the snappy quick response Corrine…guess your kidz aren’t as messy as ours;)

Since Pugoween is fast approaching…what is your absolute favorite costume that the pugs wore??? And did/do they like dressing up? Of course we dress our kidz up…Vito goes along with it. But Olive aka Queen B becomes FROZEN the minute you put her costume on her. It is as if her paws are cemented to the floor! She only moves her eyes…looking from side to side to see WHAT THE HECK we have done to her…which makes us almost pee ourselves laughing;)

Regarding singing to the pugs.I would sing “Little Brown Jug”,but substitute “Little Brown Jug"for Little black pug. Thanks for the videos.

Oh Patricia!  I love the idea of singing “Little Black Pug”!  And I guess between Pat and Patricia we have another popular name here!

As far as the OBP peeps never singing lullabies, I feel positive that if you ever had the tiniest inkling that one of the pugs would have liked it, there would be lullabies every single night 😉

Loved & laughed with today post. I sing “Puggy Girl(Neil Sedaka’s Calendar Girl-Yes I know I just aged myself) to Solsie. She just loves this-a fan of 1. Also “Puggy Love’ (and they called it)PUPPY Love by Paul Anka. Sleighbelle, it is hard when we loose our beloved fur babies and   I debated for 2 years whether to get another Boston after our sweet Buttons went to the rainbow bridge-then along came Daisey who will leave some day before to long to join Buttons then Beauty and Solsie. I can’t imagine life without Daisey, Beauty or Solsie now and realize it’s only for a time-but OH what a time it is! I hope this helps you to consider the joy that out weighs the sorrow and at very least will give you some peace. Pug hugs from pastor sue & the Colorado 2

Great videos, and one of my all time favorite songs!
Who can not help but smile when they hear Queen singing that song?!?

Seems that I have a new question after watching the videos. What is up with the boys on the ice in the goalie net?!? Looks intriguing!

Sleighbelle, everyone is different.  Myself, I never went a whole month without getting another pug.  Of course the pug who went to the Rainbow Bridge was never replaced, but the Pug personality is so instilled in me, that I found room in my heart to receive another baby almost immediately.  I have never regretted doing that.

Losing each baby is heartbreaking to say the least, but the new baby came in and helped ease the pain in a big way, and I know eventually my heart will break again. In the meantime I am giving and receiving tons of love.

There are so many pugs out there waiting for forever, loving homes.  Perhaps one of them can be yours.

Sue, thank you for your comments regarding my struggle to decide about a new pug.  I agree that there are way too many beautiful pugs out there looking for a home.  My Birdybelle was a rescue from DFW Pug Rescue and as everyone says, a rescue KNOWS they’ve been rescued and they are wonderful friends for life.  If and when I decide to take the plunge, I’ll be getting my new best friends from the rescue.

We sing to our dog.  Often to the tune of Catface (the YouTube animation), changing the lyrics to ChubbsFace.
We also find ourselves speaking for him in n his strange accent (we do it a bit Spanish - which is weird as he is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier!)
Do you find yourselves talking for your creatures?
