Enucleation

Henry

Recently, our steadfast and always strong Henry has been having ear and eye troubles. His ears have rebounded (infection-wise, not hearing-wise), but his eye woes have not only not cleared up - they have gotten worse.

At the follow up appointment on Thursday of last week, we weighed all of the options about what to do about his eye. His vision in his left eye is lost. Due to the size of the cataract in his eye, there is no hope of vision coming back if we are able to get the glaucoma under control. And despite our best efforts, we have not been able to come close to managing the glaucoma. He has not responded to the stringent course of treatment that was recommended. So, the best thing to do for Henry is to remove the painful, angry eye and allow the true healing to begin.

This whole scenario took us by storm. Henry has always been the "healthy" one. He's barely been on oral medications. Rarely eye drops. Always been able to walk far distances. Trachea still a perfect circle. Could see. Could hear. Well, in the last 10 days he basically went deaf and blind in one eye and now we have to have is eye removed.

One of the harder pills to digest is that the surgery is tomorrow. And tomorrow is Henry's birthday! The guilt I feel for scheduling Henry's eye removal surgery on his birthday is enormous. I almost put the surgery off for another week, but Henry is in a lot of pain from the glaucoma. The eye vet describes it as having a constant migraine in his eye. And it just breaks my heart to see him push he eye into the furniture or to paw at it to help alleviate some of the pressure. So, I took the first available surgery day, which happens to be his birthday, in hopes of bringing him some much needed relief.

We will keep you posted. And don't worry. We are worried enough for everyone. May good health and happiness be with you all. Squeeze your babies today! We will stay as positive as we can. Thanks for all your love & support.

He will do fine and will feel so much better! He hasn’t been able to see out of the eye so he has probably already adjusted to one eye vision.  The difference will be he won’t be in pain.  Don’t worry too much.  Just know you are helping him and he loves you. smile

You and Henry will be in our thoughts and prayers tomorrow.  Because of Henry’s good health, he will come through surgery with flying colors. Pugs are tough and resilient and he will adjust to his new situation with the help of his loving family and there will be no more pain.

My most recent rescue pug, Florence, had to have her eye removed several months ago.  It is remarkable how well she is doing.  My prayers are with Henry

I am so very sorry that Henry’s glaucoma is so severe that this is the best course of action.  What very hard news that must have been for you to take in.

You are the most caring and diligent of dog-owners.  I have always been so impressed at the way you take care of your pugs, and you are definitely doing the right thing to move forward quickly about his eye.  Henry will be in my prayers that he has a quick and easy recovery.  And you’ll be in my prayers that you feel comfort and peace on Henry’s behalf.

Give Henry some extra loving from his OBP family. ♥

Corrine, I am so sorry for your family, 2 and 4 legged.  You are doing the right thing for Henry.  He will be much happier.  Since he is so healthy otherwise, he will be fine and come through the surgery with great results.  Henry is in my prayers.

Oh Henry! That glaucoma is like a freight train…hard to stop it once it starts. Enucleation sounds so scary but you will be soooo happy once that icky (and blind!) eye is outta there. A happy pug is a healthy pug. And I can’t wait to see you as a winker - which means you get more treats! And corrine - please let me know if you have ANY questions or want to talk. We’ve been around the enucleation block a couple of times. Hugs to the Birthday Boy!

If any of the pugs could rock the one eye look Henry can!I know he will come thru this happier and healthier than ever, he is a tough cookie.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

There should be no guilt involved in getting Henry’s bad eye removed on his birthday.  You have to think of it as a birthday present to him to be out of pain, because he will be and that is a great gift.  I am so sorry this has sprung up and wish it could be different, but sweet Henry will be fine and better than he is right now.  Please be at peace over this decision.

I just got word that Henry is out of surgery and is doing well. The procedure went well. I will have more details when I pick him up this afternoon, but I just wanted to share the latest.

Thank you everyone so much for your kind words and comments. I can’t tell you how much they have helped me the last few days!  It really helped me put my mind at ease and focus on getting Henry better. Thank you! I don’t know where I would be without all you pug lovers!
