Luna vs The Monkey

Luna has a stuffed monkey that is as big as she is that she loves to shake and drag around the house.  Instead of a squeaker the monkey has what we refer to as a “screecher” inside it.  Occasionally, while tossing the monkey about, Luna will make the monkey screech.  Luna hates it when she makes the monkey screech!  She immediately stops playing with it and usually runs away.  It’s funny, but sorta sad.  It is like she feels like she hurt the monkey by playing too rough.

We actually have a little video of Luna playing with the monkey and then running away.  Check it out.  This is the first video on the Pug Blog so bear with us.  We are definitely amateur videographers.

Coach Potatoes

Coach Potatoes

During the day, while I am at home working, the pugs are generally pretty mellow.  They spend most of their time sunning themselves and catching up on their sleep.  Most of the action doesn’t really happen until I get off work, so they make sure they get all the rest they need during the day so they will have plenty of energy for their walk in the evening.

They have a lot of favorite sleeping spots around the house, but one of their favorites is definitely the sofa.  The most coveted spot is the arm of the sofa.  From this position, they can see right out the front door.  They love this spot because it allows the pug to catch a cat nap and still be able to spot any passersby.  Because barking at those who walk by the house is definitely one of their favorite pastimes.

The 3 Little Pigs

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween Everyone!  This year the pugs are the 3 Little Pigs for Halloween.  Henry piggy, the smart one has bricks added to his pig costume.  Luna pig, next in line with brains has sticks added to her costume and poor Benjamin is the piggy that made his house of straw.  We look forward to walking around the neighborhood early this evening and then opening the door for trick or treaters!  Enjoy your holiday festivities!

She Learns!

Down

When little Luna came to us, she knew nothing. OK, maybe not “nothing.” She had some street smart skills - like scavenging through garbage cans, but she didn’t know any basic simple commands like “sit,” “down,” “off,” etc. She didn’t have a clue about walking on a leash and she even jumped up on table tops because she just didn’t know any better. Well, fortunately, we have managed to undo some of her bad habits, such as the standing on table tops and leash walking. (She’s not perfect at the whole leash thing but at least she pretty much stays on the path, now.) Through much training and practice, she has mastered the sit command.

However, what we are really pleased to brag about today, though, is that for the first time, she has achieved the down command on a semi-regular basis. We used to think that it was impossible for her to ever get a grasp on this because she always seemed to want to keep her derriere in the air. Well, at long last, she has gained a clue to the command of “down.” We wouldn’t say she has aced it quite yet, but it did seem like a huge breakthrough. If you have ever seen “The Miracle Worker” it was similar to the scene where Annie Sullivan helps Helen Keller learn the sign for “water.” As a matter of fact, we giggled amongst ourselves that she CAN learn! Talk about teaching an old dog new tricks! It can be done, but believe you me, it is so much easier when they are puppies!

Bark For a Cure

Benjamin in his Bark for a Cure shirt

October is breast cancer awareness month and Benjamin, Henry & Luna thought they would show their support with their new Bark For a Cure t-shirts.  Luna loves to prance around in anything pink so she was quite happy with her new shirt.  The boys on the other hand, weren’t so happy with their new pink duds.  But after I explained things to them, they decided they were manly enough to sport their new pink shirts.

Piece of Cake

Luna after surgery

Luna is sure a tough as nails little pug!  She came through the surgery with flying colors.  She came out of the anesthesia early, wasn’t cranky and was simply a total trooper.  Heck, she was barely even tired.  She is totally unfazed by the lovely “E” collar she has to wear for the next week.  She looks like a satellite dish that you would have on the side of your house, but she is still our pretty girl!  Headgear and all!

The vet stitched her upper and lower lids together at the corner of her eye with just one little stitch in order to help her eye heal and not be so bulgy and prone to infections.  That has made it so you can barely see the wound itself.  (Which is sort of nice for those weak in the knees.)

Benjamin was so sweet, though.  He wanted to hug up to her while she napped.  He checked in on her eye by trying to inspect the inside of her cone collar.  He just gave it a little sniff and then he stood by her awhile as a protective older brother.  He stayed with her until she settled.  He settled next to her for a little while, too.  They made quite the pair.

Luna and Benjamin

Henry used this time to get a little one on one time with mom.  He is such a smarty pants.  He takes advantage of every potential opportunity to get a little extra Henry time.  They are all good little soldiers.

It will take about 2 weeks for the biopsy to come back, but it already sounds like good news because the vet said that Luna’s eye had responded so well to the million eye drops we have given her over the last week and that cancer wouldn’t respond to any of those medications.  So that sounds like great news.  She’ll still be on all the same medications for at least another week.  They will see how it goes when she goes back for her follow up exam (and to have that one stitch removed).

It is all so relieving.  She did such a great job.  We will all sleep well tonight!

Thanks to you all for your support and prayers.  It helped to pull us all through!

The Drop

The drop has been made.  Little Luna is now at the ophthalmologist awaiting surgery.  We should have an update from them around lunch time.  Can’t wait until we can pick the little one up.
