Our good friends over at A Day in the Life of Our Pugs just recently announced the grand opening of their new store The Pawhaus. The Pawhaus is a fabulous store with lots of wonderful gift sets for your pup. So stop on by and check them out. Don’t forget that the holidays are just around the corner!

Overall, Henry’s report from his annual check up was good news. The Dr. says he is in good shape and that his teeth, eyes and coat look really good. However, he has arthritis in both his knees. This is only a little bit shocking to us. Henry has had arthritis in his left knee since he was a pup. But we were surprised to hear that he has arthritis in his right knee (his good knee) and that the arthritis is actually worse in that knee.
When Henry was about 6 months old we found out that he had hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is more common in larger breeds and the Dr. said that if we kept Henry at a good weight he would most likely never require any type of surgery on his hips. When Henry was about a year old, however, he started to hold up his left leg. We soon found out that he had luxating patella, which basically means that his knee cap was sliding in and out of place. The Dr.‘s speculated that this was most likely caused by him compensating for his hip dyslasia. He did require surgery to fix this problem and after his physical therapy he has done very well. We were told shortly after his surgery for his knee that he had developed some arthritis in his knee. It has never been much of a problem though.
Now, however, Henry has developed quite a bit of arthritis in his right knee and the Dr. said that his knee cap is a little loose. So he may need to have the same surgery on his right knee that he did on his left knee. The main thing that is worrisome about this is that Henry is no longer the spry young pup that he once was. At a year old, the first surgery was very hard on him and the physical therapy exercises that we had to do nearly killed him and I both. Henry is now going on 6 years old and I can not imagine going through the surgery and the physical therapy again. Nor can I bear the thought of how the arthritis is going to affect him later in life.
Right now, he acts fine and he does not require any type of surgery on his right knee. Granted, he is not as agile as Benny and he can’t jump up on the bed like Benjamin & Luna can, but that is really nothing new. He has been that way since he was a pup. Just the thought of having to go through it all again looms over me.
So for now, the Dr. prescribes lots of swimming since it is very low impact and helps keep him trim and in shape. That is really the best thing we can do for him at this point.

Benjamin, Henry & Luna all made a trip to their veterinarians and eye doctors last week and we got a mixed report for all three. Little Luna had an appointment with her eye doctor, which is about 90 miles from home. While the drive is a pain, Luna doesn’t seem to mind it and she thinks she is a big girl because she gets to go somewhere where her brothers do not. This was a routine visit for Luna at the eye doctor and we were hoping for good news. If we got a good report on this trip we could drop back her visits to every 6 months instead of monthly. Her eyes were looking good to us, but the ophthalmologist had different news for us. It seems that she has detected what might be an ulcer on Luna’s eye. At this stage it is hard to tell, so the Dr. put a special drop in Luna’s eye and we are brining her back in two weeks. The special drop will allow the Dr.‘s to get a better look at what is going on in Luna’s eye and give us a better prognosis. We are keeping our fingers crossed on this one and hoping for a good report.
The following day, Benjamin & Henry went to the regular vet for their annual checkup and to get their latest shots. Henry got some mixed news, but I will discuss that later. The real shock was Benny. While the Dr. said that Benny is in tip top physical condition the Dr. was concerned with Benny’s eyes. It seems Benny has the early signs of Entropion, which means that his bottom eyelid is rolling in and causing his eye lashes to irritate his eyes. The good news is that this can be fixed, but the bad news is that it requires surgery and can often reoccur after it has been surgically corrected. The veterinarian recommended that we take Benny in to see the ophthalmologist. So, since we had already scheduled an appointment at the ophthalmologist for Luna we called back and got an appointment for Benny as well. So much for Luna’s special time. Her brother now gets to join her on the long car ride. I will keep everyone updated and share the news as soon as we know something new.

For this week’s Caption This we are going back to May 2004. We were still living in MD then and we attended a Pug Festival that was held at a local outdoor hockey rink (no ice, the players wore roller blades). This was one of the best pug events that I have ever been to because it was great to be able to let the pugs off leash and not have to continually do the leash dance each time you meet a new pug or pug lover.
Being a hockey rink there were of course hockey goals there and I just could not resist setting Benjamin & Henry up as goal tenders. This is one of my favorite pictures of the boys. Not because it is such a fantastic photo, but because it just shows that the boys are good sports and put up with all the silly things I ask them to do.
Can’t wait to see your captions in the comments!

Henry: Come on, Luna! Let’s get in the pool. The water is plenty warm.
Luna: When I was looking for my forever home, I specifically requested a home just like this one, but with no big puddle in the back yard! Can’t a girl catch a break!

DancesInGarden had a wonderful suggestion last week for the picture we posted of Luna in the new garden in the backyard. She thought that with a little cropping on the photo would could get a great shot of Luna with the coneflower. I agreed, so I took her advice and did some cropping on the photo. I think it came out pretty well. I just wish I hadn’t take the photo from inside the screen. The photo would be much clearer.
Just to compare, here is the original shot before I cropped the picture.

I know this is the Pug Blog, but every once in awhile I can’t resist posting a few picture of Cupid, our kitty. Cupid is 9 years old now and is a constant companion to me. Every Monday - Friday she sprawls out on my desk and works with me the entire day. She purrs, she kneads, she sheds and sometimes when I pet here she drools. And on the weekends, she wants to know why I am such a slacker and I don’t work on Saturday & Sunday.
But don’t worry, she is still in the mix of everything on the weekends. Each weekend morning, she helps us read the paper.

She is always in the mix. On Labor Day weekend, we had a party and few people where trying to get in a game of pool. Cupid would have none of it though, because the pool table is her second favorite place to sleep. So we had a little fun with her and outlined her in the pool balls. She loved the attention!
