Happy Birthday, Benjamin!

Benjamin

Today Baby Benny turns 11 years old!

I know it sounds a bit cliche, but I can't believe that Benjamin is 11 years old. I remember the day we brought him home like it was yesterday.

Benjamin

He was a non stop bundle of energy that ate EVERYTHING! It's hard to see in his puppy picture, since it is so small, but he is chomping on a stick. In addition to sticks, he was a connoisseur of mulch, shoelaces, rocks, wicker baskets, the leg of the sofa and a wild mushroom that earned him an overnight stay at the emergency vet.

Lucky for us, he stopped eating pretty much everything on that list except for mulch. He is still a sucker for fresh mulch from the garden.

While Benny has always had a wild side, his sweet side is even bigger. He is never far away and will happily sit on your lap and gaze longingly into your eyes. Benny has a way about him that makes you feel loved.

I couldn't imagine how boring the last 11 years would have been without Benny!

Watering Hole

Benjamin and Luna

I wish every park we went to had a doggie water fountain. It is super convenient and it allows the pugs to rehydrate in the middle of their walk. Plus, it means I can leave the water in the car and don't have to lug it on our walk since I know there is a fountain nearby.

The funny thing is that Benny was afraid of the water fountain the first few times he encountered it. Luna wasn't too keen on it either. They kept waiting for it to fill up like a water bowl and wanted me to turn the fountain off before they started to drink. I guess they didn't want the fountain to splash on them, which is hysterical if you have seen either one of them at a regular water bowl. Both of them are super messy drinkers and Benny inevitably drags his neck wrinkles in the bowl.

Henry loves the fountain as it gives him a chance to channel his inner big dog. He doesn't drink from the bowl part, instead he drinks straight from the fountain.

Flashback Friday

Henry

Today's flashback of Henry is from November, 2003

Cupid had this toy that looked like a little hamster. The toy had a pull string on it and when you pulled it the toy would vibrate and move around on the floor. Pretty standard stuff for a cat toy and while it peaked Cupid's interest from time to time, she wasn't all that impressed.

Henry, on the other hand, thought that this was the greatest toy ever once he figured out how to pull the string.

Step 1: He would grab a hold of the little ring on the end of the pull string.

Henry

Step 2: He would hold the hamster with his paw and pull the string as far back as he could.

Henry

Step 3: He would wait for the little hamster to come flying back at him.

Repeat steps 1-3 for hours of puppy fun.

Nipped

Cupid

While we were out and about this weekend we picked out a little surprise for Cupid - a catnip plant. Cupid goes crazy over dried catnip, so we were curious how she would react to the plant. So far, she has managed to keep her cool. She is very interested in the plant. She smells the leaves and rubs all over the pot, but she hasn't tried to eat the plant or anything like that yet. Which is good, because I was a little worried she might go crazy and yank the plant right out of the pot.

Strong Like Bull

Benjamin

Last week's post about Luna's dry eye, sparked some comments about how everyone's pugs handle eye drops. I can totally relate to everyone who struggles to give their pug drops. Until Benjamin needed eye drops I never really appreciated how cooperative Luna is when it comes to eye drops.

When it is time to give Luna an eye drop she doesn't budge. You can walk right up to her and plop the drop right in her eye. You are done in less than 5 seconds.

Benny, on the other hand, is exhausting. When he first started needing eye drops, he thought he could avoid them by running away. However, he always just seemed to walk to a corner of a room and face the wall. So, he wasn't really hard to catch. Where Benny excels at thwarting eye drops is in the strength of his eye lids. When you try to give him drops, he will close his eyes. And he doesn't just close his eyes, he holds them closed with all his might - which is a lot surprisingly. Prying open his eyelids are no easy task and once you get them open you have to be fast with the drops because you only have a small window to sneak in the drop.

Lucky for us, he has gotten a bit better with taking his eye meds, but he is still no where near as good as Luna. What a difference a pug makes!
