So i gave the pups (COCO,LU, and BEAU) a bath yesterday in the beautiful MD weather!!! They were not too happy about it, but oh so soft and great smelling….may get into the habit of this!!! Although it was a BIG job and they fought me tooth and nail!! But its always worth it in the end!!!

You stay where you are, and I’ll sit over here and look pretty.

Had an emergency run to the vet this morning.  Romeo got his rabies vaccination yesterday and the vet gave him a shot of Benadryl because he has had reactions in the past.  This morning he was doing well and all of a sudden had trouble getting up and had the shakes.  I loaded him up and drove like a bat out of you know what to the vet.  He is currently on a steriod IV drip, and they will keep up to observe him.  The vet told me he will no longer be able to take these vaccinations,  He is in good hands, but I won’t be happy until he is safe at home again.

Oh Sue VDB, nooooo!  That’s awful but at least you got him to the vet so they could care for him…He must REALLY be allergic!

My caption…“This is the brother we don’t talk about…His name is Doyle…Can you see the family resemblence?  We have the same nose!”

Question for all….Coco has been squinting her eyes lately and they have been running a little….the whites (when i pull back the lids) are red….Do you think its an allergic reaction to all of the pollen….Maryland is terrible right now….Everything has a yellow hue on it!! She has never had a problem in past years…and the other 2 (dogs) seem to be fine. I’ve been keeping them in alot even though they love to lay in the sun! Thanks!

Roberta, it could be allergies…C.J. just went through that but I took him to the vet and she rx’d some steroid eye drops to help with the inflammation.  He and Toeby both take Clemastine for allergies but it doesn’t seem to help much…

Sue VDB - OH NO!!!!  I can’t believe poor Romeo!  Poor little boy to have to go through so much.  What will they do for him for the vaccinations now that he can’t take the shot?  I am praying with all my might for his very quick recovery and that he gets back into your loving arms this afternoon.  Please keep us posted as I know we will all be anxiously awaiting the good news that he is OK and home where he belongs!

This picture is so cute.  How did you get the gargoyle to pose like Luna?

What is it with vaccinations?  I keep reading about their pitfalls but then, what do you do?  My gang get 3- year shots but that’s no guarantee.  There is still the danger.  Sue VDB, you are in our thoughts and know how much happiness and relief you will have when Romeo gets home for some luvin’.  Prayers and Pug hugs!

First of all, your thoughts and prayers mean so much.

Got a call from the vet, and Romeo is finally back to his normal self.  They were concerned because some of his symptoms were so unusual.  In addition to the IV they also gave him a muscle relaxant because he was so unsteady.  They want to keep him until 5 pm to keep observing him.  If he again shows symptoms (please no St. Francis) I will have to take him to a specialist.
I am somewhat concerned this may have some lasting affect on him.

Romeo received a 3 year vaccine, which is supposed to be less stressful on them, but evidently not in this case.  I did some more research on rabies vaccines, and some of the pharmaceuticals claim one rabies vaccine should last between 5-7 years, but laws dictate otherwise.  I understand there is a movement going on to rescind the one year or three year law on these vaccines.  I will really begin to look into this. Romeo will be 15 when his vaccine expires, and hopefully he will still be healthy.  I also read that some states will accept a vaccination exemption signed by the vet, if there is an illness or a reaction caused by the vaccine.  You guys may want to look into this.

I also read that some symptoms from rabies vaccine can occur months and longer after receiving them, but most vets don’t recoginize the problem being from the vaccine.  It’s really scary.

If I’m not kicked off here by the long post, I will give an update when I have my Romeo in my arms.

Thanks again everyone.

Roberta, sorry to hear about Coco’s peepers (and that I missed it)...perhaps wash them out with some liquid tears and see if it gives her some relief, if only temporarily until you can get a vet’s opinion?  I hope she feels better soon with all that pollen!

Sue, I’m so sorry Romeo had such a bad reaction.  I hope by now he’s in your arms and doing well.

My son’s pug, Norman, had a reaction that was nearly fatal from his first rabies vaccine.  When it was time for his next one, the vet said he would do it different, and it would be fine.  It wasn’t.  Again, Norman nearly died.  A year after that when I got Bennie, I decided there would be no rabies vaccine for him.  Our vet accepted my choice.  I don’t board Bennie in a kennel, so that isn’t an issue.  And as far as what our state or city requires…...  Sshhhh! To me the risk was too great.  And Bennie certainly isn’t roaming around where he could be exposed to any rabies.

“Hungry I am. Food bowl you fill.”  He looks like a relative of Yoda!!  Luna is adorable as always!

Sue, praying Romeo has no lasting effects from the vaccine.  My daughter’s pug, Zorro, has reactions - his face swells and he has difficulty breathing.  She’s a veterinarian, so she’s always prepared for a reaction.

Thanks everyone for the coco comments, she looks a little better right now but i have kept her in most of the day…..but on to the vaccines…our maltese had her shots one time many years ago….now mind you she weighs 7 and they gave her the same dose that they would give any other size dog. So my daugher had her in the waiting room while i was still in the exam room with the others…and after a few minutes she came in and said “something is wrong”...well she nearly fell over, sorta like fainting, and the vet scooped her up shaved her arm and immediately gave her an IV of something!!! So fast that i barely had time to react to any of it. It was very tramatic and then they kept her…well i went back that same evening and got her but now she gets a 1/2 dose and only to be groomed or I wouldnt do it at all. After they put in the IV they checked her gums which were white….1st sign of tramma. By the time i took her home the gums were pink again. Seriously if they are lap dogs and arent exposed to things why try and harm them?? The groomer insists on the rabies but none of the others go to the groomer or a kennel or anywhere else. I never was a goer to the dr. nor did i take my kids at the drop of every hat…so it’s hard for me to take the 4 dogs and 3 cats every minute. They are tuff little creatures and are fine. Our Golden Retriever lived to be 14 1/2 and loved every day of his life and rarely saw the vet.

Romeo is home after spending the day in intensive care!  Thanks again everyone for your kindness.  He was a much different Romeo when I picked him up compared to this morning.  He was very happy to see his mama.  The vet did tell me to observe him closely, as I will anyway, because they know he had a reaction to the vaccine, but think something else must have been triggered by it because some of his neurological symptoms were not consistent with a vaccine reaction. I don’t want my baby to have to go through anymore of this.

The day (evening now) has turned much brighter.

Sue VDB so glad Romeo is doing better and home with his momma I know you must be so happy
Roberta glad to hear Coco is doing better also a round of milk bones for everyone

Thanks sue, but Romeo’s treat will have to be veggies until he loses weight.  He can still have his one Wellness bite in the morning when I give Missy her Phenobarbital tablet and one in the evening for Missy’s other dose.  I cut him down to 1/4 c of dry food this evening, and gave him a few cooked green beans to fill him up without a large calorie intake. When I found out he was going to be ok, I went to the store and got a larger supply of veggies so he can have them as well.

As I write this it is almost 2 am.  I am unable to get to sleep.  Think I was too wound up today, plus I keep checking on Romeo, who until I got up has been snuggled close to me, sleeping soundly. I’m thinking I will want to go to sleep at 6:45 am, when I have to get up because my grandson is spending the night and have to get him up to get dressed for school and fix his breakfast.
