Chewing

Luna

Benjamin, Henry & Sol find chewing their food highly overrated. If it fits in their mouth, chances are good that they will attempt to swallow it whole rather than waste time chewing. Luna, on the other hand, chews everything. This irritates the others to no end. They wolf their treat down and then they all stare at Luna with jealous looks wondering why she gets more treats. They are all amazed how Luna can exponential increase the number of treats she gets just by chewing!

One most days, I usually mention to Benjamin, Henry & Sol that they should be more like their sister and chew their food, but I am happy they swallow things whole when it comes to giving pills. Monday, was the first of the month and the first of the month means it is time to give the pugs their heart worm medicine. I got out the lunch meat and wrapped each of the pills in meat and then gave the pugs their treats. Benjamin swallowed his whole, Sol swallowed hers & Henry did the same. Little Luna chewed and chewed and chewed and then out pops the pill. So, I wrapped it in another piece of lunch meat and gave it to her again. She chewed, chewed and chewed some more and then plop - out comes the pill. By this point the brown coating on the pill is a sticky mess and the pill is as slippery as it can be. I finally get it picked up off the floor and then stick it in another piece of lunch meat. She chews this one, but this time I luck out and she swallows the pill. Ha ha! Score one for mom.

I have three of mine taking pills right now and the only thing I find that will prevent the pill being returned to me after the treat is gone is peanut butter.

Our vet dispenses heart worm medicine that is neatly disguised as a beef treat! Little Luna really knows how to get “More”-bit-spit-bit-spit-bit pill gone! You are such a clever little princess! Pug-hugs from the Colorado 3

sue s, Abby gets the Heartgard chewy beef treat too, she never has a clue she just had medicine!

The other amazing invention for getting pills down is the “Pill Pocket”, sorta a non-descript very pug-lovin smelly beef mooshy treat that you mold around the pill.  Abby also gulps those down (with her cough pill) and never knows the truth under all that numminess:-)

Miss Luna, you really are a dainty little girl…clever, too.  Pills are disguised in Pill Pockets at my house and the beefy Heartgard is given to my babies…not a problem one; however, if you have a lot of pills to give the Pill Pockets can be pricey.

Luna you keep outsmarting them baby girl.

Bennie used to worry me so much with his habit of swallowing everything immediately with no need of chewing.  I’ve never had a pug before and every other dog I’ve had chewed food.  But I guess it’s a pug’s way, and they seem no worse for wear.

Oh no, Poor Cupid lost his play tower to the wind and water.  I’m sure it will dry out quickly Cupid, don’t worry!

OK…I have used both the peanutbutter or a small ball of cream cheese. However I still have to smash the pills to powder and mix them in. We also use the beef cubes.

four of my pugs swallow they never chew toby my other pug chews everything I dont have a problem with pills either as put it in a little lunch meat and gone in seconds I give them heart guard and they think its a treat one of my boxers is like Luna it is so hard to give him any pills he eats the good stuff then spits the pill out every time even his heart guard pill

Sleighbelle

03/03/2010

Sleighbelle is a “swallower” also.  I tell her it will last longer and actually taste better if she would chew, but heck, that takes too much time!  And when it comes to pills, a little dab of peanut butter works for me.  When I would put it in a piece of cheese or lunch meat that girls radar went into overdrive and she would eat the treat and spit out the pill…everytime!
My little Birdy, now was a “chewer” and it made Sleighbelle mad too, cause she would stand there, after swallowing, waiting to check out Birdy’s bowl, in case she left anything (she never did!).  And for the pills?  I could just give it to Birdy and she would eat it, no hiding necessary.

NEW WALLPAPER!  That is one of the cutest Luna photos in a long time!

C.J. and Toeby get their “treat” on the 1st of the month also and it’s a toss up to see if Toeby will swallow his pill or yak it back up!  C.J., NO problem!

Doing now…Seems the weather just stays crazy right now!  We’re not used to much rain here and we’re scheduled for several more days of rain!  Going to Wally World in Orlando on the 21st of this month and I hope the weather cooperates!!
