Early Detection Reiterated

Henry

We wanted to take a moment to sound like a Public Service Announcement (PSA). We say that with a bit of sarcasm, but really, we want to express the importance of early detection in cancer cases. Since early detection played such a critical role in our good fortune (and who refers to cancer as good fortune?). But seriously, it was truly by happenstance that Henry's cancer was uncovered. It was only discovered because we were looking to help his health in a different area. Henry still has IBD and that is manageable. But if we had overlooked his poopy problems and if our vet had not been diligent and opted to keep going down a road of not just "tying new foods" then we would not likely not have noticed Henry's cancer until it was too late.

Here is the moral of our story.....if you or your puggy (or anyone you love) is "not right" and you know that there is something more going on, keep pushing to find answers. Your suspicions are probably right. Don't put off a test that could ultimately save a life because you think it's frivolous or that they won't find anything anyway. If we had not had Henry get that second sonogram, we would like be talking about how Henry only has x amount of time left, rather thank looking forward to a more positive future. We know, of course, that this is not always possible and by nature we have a tendency to let "little things slide" but I urge you all to at least try to pay attention to the little warnings and don't let them go until they are so big that your lives are so forever changed that you can only think of how things would be different if you could set the clock back in time.

We are truly so thankful that our vet suggested another sonogram (and also grateful that he did not charge us for it) and how it revealed more than we bargained for but that without that second screening we would not be in a place where we could so confidently move forward.

Just as Solsey Baby, Baby Benny and Little Looney have all taught us life lessons, let us also learn from Handsome Henry what he is teaching us now as we go along the pug loving path. Early Detection. Early Intervention. Henry Strong. All day long.

Very well stated.  Procrastination is not a friend when it comes to health.

Handsome Henry, hope you are feeling better today.

Everyone, please have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend.

Thank you for this post.  It is such a good reminder.  As a nurse, I have seen too many times, a situation that would have been entirely different (in a good way) if only something had been caught sooner.  Thank you handsome Hank for reminding all your friends of the importance of early detection.  Now everybody, go get your mammograms, colonoscopies, etc, etc smile

So very true…and to that I would add this-don’t be afraid to ask questions! If you aren’t comfortable with something your doctor is proposing then ask questions or seek a second opinion! Hope Henry is feeling more like his pug self today:)

On behalf of Corrine:
Today is still rough for Henry doodle boy.  He has zero appetite (is not eating-very un pug like) and barely drinking.  He is very under the weather.  We are taking him back to our local vet this afternoon for evaluation, bloodwork, possible injection for his continued nausea and perhaps an appetite stimulant.  We are trying very hard to remain positive and optimistic and to stay cool for Henry.  We are coordinating the care between both our general vet and our oncology vet to be sure he is getting exactly what he needs.  We will be taking care of him through this long holiday weekend and hope to have wonderful update for you all on Tuesday morning.  Thank you all again for your continued well wishes! Happy & safe Labor Day to all!

My thoughts and prayers are with you. My Lilly-Belle rescue just had surgery and is recuperating. She has mammary gland cancer. The vet removed as much of the mass as she could. Due to her age, although we really don’t know for sure how old she is, we will not put her through another operation. Lilly is comfortable and loved.
Please have a thorough examination of your pets every 6 months. They can’t tell us if something is wrong.
Wishing everyone a safe holiday weekend.

I am so sorry that Henry is having a rough time with the after effects of his chemo.  I’m praying that your vet can give him something to help him feel more comfortable.  Love to all of you and continued prayers for Henry!

And, I think you have done a very good thing in posting a Public Service Announcement.  Everything you said is so important!
