Guard Dog

Luna

With poor vision and a stature that barely lets her see out the front door, Luna isn’t much of an intimidating presence.  Her usual role is to merely support her brothers in barking at whatever they spot outside the door and to show whoever dares to walk in front of the house that if the pugs should so happen to get out from behind this glass door you will be covered in pug kisses three fold.  They have the oddest way of going about saying hello - they bark their heads off.  But, if you were to let them out they would be as nice and charming as a pug can be.

There have been a few times, and I emphasize a few, that Luna was the lone pug to spot something going on out the front door.  And I really wished this happened more often, because it really cracks me up.  Usually, Luna is not one bit aware of what she is barking at out the front door.  She simply barks because that is what her brothers are doing.  But if she happens to spot something that her brothers do not, she tenses up, her ears go into a total alert position and you can just see her straining to see.  She stands totally quiet for a second or two trying so hard to process what is going on and wondering why her brothers are not leading the charge.  Then, in spurts, she let’s out a Dino-esque bark.  When she barks her hind feet leave the ground a bit and after a few barking spurts she is frantically looking for her brothers.  You can just see that she is overwhelmed by the responsibility of being the only one to spot the passerby.  That she is totally not confident in her ability to take on a task this big, but yet the task is way to important to be ignored.  So she sounds the alarm and her brothers can never get there quick enough to suit her.  You can just tell that the whole situation is playing out in slow-motion in her head.

Without fail, one if not both of her brothers charge the door and Luna quickly resumes her supporting barker role.  A role she is much more comfortable starring in.

I so enjoy your pics.  I would love to get a hold of little Luna and give her all kinds of love.  She is so precious.  Your pics really make my day.  I look forward to what’s next.  I too have pugs.  My pure bred is Chopper and his eye sight is also getting poor, but his pekapug brother and sister more than make up for his eyes.  The joy of each little personality is overwhelming sometimes.  What a pleasure and honor to be owned by Pugs!!!!  Thank you so much for sharing.

It is so funny; my Sleighbelle and Birdy are like your boys and Luna.  Birdy has limited eyesight and she follows Sleighbelle’s lead:  if Sleighbelle is barking or excited, so is Birdy, even though she doesn’t really know why…she just trusts that her big sister will not leave her out of the fun.  And with Birdy’s physical issues, when she barks, her whole body moves back a few inches, so that if she is really going at it, she ends up 2 or 3 feet from where she started barking.  She makes me smile every single day!

I can see it unfolding now! Its funny how sometimes you can see their thought process..

Indy and Gus are the same way… Indy loves to watch out the window and if she sees someone walk by with a dog, she starts by growling and then huffing and puffing. Gus totally ignores her and then when Indy finally hops up, Gus launches himself at the window barking away and at that point, nothing is there!!
Silly puppies!

Carpet is so common these days, I don’t know how many people have the “pleasure” of hearing little puggie feet running across a wooden floor.  We have a couple of rooms that have old wooden floors and when the guys hear something, they charge, usually spinning their wheels around a corner, sounding like a herd of something!  It’s hilarious.  Between the barking and the noisy feet, an intruder would think they were in big trouble. lol Hopefully, they would run before they fell victim to the Dynamic Duo (the guy’s nickname at their meetup group) and were licked to death! lol

Carla,
I have wood floors and experience the same stampede of pug toes!  It is very funny to see them wipe out rounding a corner!

Very well said. I think you should consider writing a novel.  “Marley and Me” was a huge bestseller; what about “Benny, Henny, and Looney Tunes?” I’d just love to read all about your kids in depth, as would your other devoted fans and fellow pug owners.  You have a wonderful way with words that enables everyone “owned by pugs” to relate to just how adorable, fantastic and weird pugs really are.

In Jan of 07 we got a pug puppy. I cannot imagine life without him, he makes me laugh & smile everyday, and his pug love is tenfold, you forgive him for being a bit “bad”.  I enjoy your site, your pictures & all the comments & captions.  Benny, Henry & Luna warm my heart. I have to check in on them at least twice a day!!

Aw - I ditto Pat’s sentiments!
Little Luna - what a doll!!!
My old guy wasn’t much of a barker until I moved to Cali. Now every time someone comes anywhere near the balcony he is barking up a storm and rushing the screen door.
Frankie my rescue hardly barks at all - he does talk though when it’s time to eat and lets out this gutteral speech and every once in a while he will let out a short sharp Woof! - I bet in a few more years Benee will have him barking too!
Happy Puggles to everyone!

Lola has started doing this too! Guarding us and the apartment. She does the “bfffbfff..ROOROOROOROO!” bark. Then paces back and forth between the living room and the bedroom and then cuddles between us and stands on either me or my DBF with her head up, ears back, alert stance. Its so funny.

I love all the stories and I second that you should write a book about the OBP world!!  I love this little Puggie community…thank you for sharing Henry, Benjamin, and The Miss with us!  I’m addicted to them too!!

Happy weekend to all the puggies and their families!
