It never felt so great to be wrong

Henry at the eye doctor with Luna

Last Friday Luna had a checkup at the ophthalmologist to see how her eyes are doing.  We made a little day trip out of it, more to come on that, so Benjamin & Henry came along for the visit.  Luna tried to have Henry get the eye exam in her place, but the doctor noticed that it wasn’t little Luna on the table and Henry happily switched places with her.

Going into this appointment I was bracing myself for bad news. Luna’s eyes had been looking pretty dry to me and I thought she had a little bit more water buildup on her good eye.  But, the exam just proved that I don’t know what I am talking about.  Luna’s eyes were pretty much the same as our last visit.  Her tear production in both eyes remained the same and there was no additional water buildup.  The doctor was actually quite pleased with the condition of her eyes.  It looks like we finally found the right combination of drops to maintain the vision that she has left.  So we are going to stick to the same drop routine and Luna does not have to go back for another follow-up for 8-10 months!  We are super excited about that!  Usually, we have to go back every 4-6 weeks!

While we were at the ophthalmologist office, we also re-stocked on all her meds.  I knew we were running low on everything so I knew this visit was going to be a hard hit on the wallet.  When we were checking out, the receptionist went over what was done and the meds we were getting and said our total for today was $246.00.  Before I could process anything the words, “THAT’S IT?” immediately left my mouth.  The receptionist, who has swiped my credit card on countless occasions, chuckled saying that we got off easy on this visit.  She also told me about their new handy dandy computer system and within a few seconds was able to tell me that we have spent over $4,000 on Luna’s eyes alone in the last two years.

That’s very handy to know for budgeting purposes.  That works out to be a little over $1,000 per eye per year!

Money aside, I was very pleased with the good report that Luna got in this visit.  It has been tough trying to figure out the right combination of drops for her, but I think we finally have a routine that works.

Can’t blame a girl for trying to get her big bro to take her place!!
Glad things went well at the docs office!

Ha…When I saw $246 I thought that was a total bargain…that’s a “normal” visit for us!!

I am so thrilled to hear of Luna’s check up!!!  I hope that I am equally as lucky to be wrong when Baxter goes next month.  I’m trying to remain optimistic, but it’s hard because I have that momma intuition…

I know you’ve posted before, but would you mind sharing Luna’s regimine?  Bax has lack of tear production too and has had problems with ulcers…He’s only on cyclosporin twice a day and I just don’t think it’s cutting it.

So hooray for the Miss!!!  We were praying for her.  Seems to me this calls for a celecration with blueberry bread!

Congrats to Luna and her precious little eyes.  I’m so glad that you are set for the next many months!  Congrats also to your checkbook!

God has blessed you and little Luna.  After all the trial and error, success has been achieved.  May little Luna have a very long and healthy life, maintaining the eyesight she has.  She is so precious.  Hugs and kisses.

God has blessed you and Luna.  After much worry it must feel good to finally come up with the right meds.  May precious little Luna have a long and healthy life, maintaining the sight he has.  Hugs and kisses.

If you don’t mind my asking… What combination of drops are you using for Luna? Where do you take her to the Opthamologist? My Rosie, adopted from CPR last year, is blind and has dry eye. We have her on Tacrolimus and neopolydex, both ointments, and we aren’t seeing much improvement. We are doing everything we can to avoid surgery. Poor girl! Any comments or suggestions would be great, Thank you.

That’s such great news about little Luna’s eyes.  Let’s all cross our fingers and hope for a good diagnosis from now on.  I do have a question, though. How did you know that there was something not right about Luna’s eyes in the first place?  Did your regular vet discover the problem? Also, how did you find a canine eye specialist? Were you referred or did you do your own investigative research?  When Rocky and Adrian go for a check up, all the vet does is look briefly in their eyes.  Inquiring minds would love to know!  Thanks.

I will write up a post about Luna’s drop schedule for Friday - it’ll be long one grin

Heather - I will be thinking about little Baxter and hoping that all goes well for him.

Patty - When we adopted Luna they told us that she had eye issues.  Her main problem is dry eye and if Rocky or Adrian had it you would definitely know.  Her eyes look extremely dry and when she blinks her eyelid does not close all the way.  They just don’t have that twinkle in them.  They are very dull looking.  I think another problem pugs commonly have is when their eyelashes curl in and irritate their eyes.  I believe this results in very watery eyes.  Our regular vet recommended the eye specialist to us, but Google is a great way to find the one closest to you.

Thanks everyone for all your well wishes.  We are very lucky to have little Luna as part of our family.

As you may already know, our Charlie goes to see Dr Wolf (vet ophthalmologist) for pigmentary keratitis. We have been using Tacrolimus drops + systane drops + puralube oint. with good success. We first noticed eye problems (dark scar tissue growing on the surface of both eyes)shortly after we adopted him from a rescue. Our vet started him on cyclosporin drops + lubricating drops until we were able to see the ophthalmologist. Charlie has been a great sport throughout the entire diagnosis and treatment… and his tear production is in the normal range now! Hang in there Luna (& mom!)... our prayers are with you!

I am glad things are going well for Luna.. haha 246$ is never that ‘much’ at the vet.. even if nothing is wrong!

I need to start premptively brushing Gus and Indy’s teeth… I saw the vet bills for my mom’s dog.. basically what Luna’s eyes cost in the span of a one year for 2 dogs! Ahh!

Thanks so much for the info.  I will make it a point to talk to the vet and ask for a more extensive eye check next visit. I’m so very happy about Luna.  She’s a very special and very lucky little girl.  She has brothers who love her and a Mom and Dad who give her the best of care and all of their love as well.  Keep up the good work and please keep us all posted!

To Heather and Baxter, and all the puggies out there with eye problems.  Over the years I have been very fortunate with my puggies.  I will include all puggies in my prayers today.  God bless.

All puggies apparently can use the prayers!  Had C.J. at the vet yesterday for a possible avulsion fracture in his left “wrist”.  The big silly jumped off of the patio table (which he wasn’t supposed to be on in the first place).  Bill yesterday $274.00 for the xray etc.  Waiting for specialist opinion for possible surgery and am seriously expecting to go broke one day from all the vet bills! Please all, keep fingers crossed and prayers in the air!

I am sincerely happy for Luna!  I think it’s great that she gets a break for a while.  How chivalrous of Henry to try and take her exam for her.  That’s too funny!

Sue, thank you so much for your prayers.  That means so much to me!!  I pray that Bax can join Luna in the “good checkup” department!

Karen, I am so sorry to hear of your little daredevil’s possible injury.  We will keep him in our thoughts and prayers too!

Thanks, Heather!  Best of luck to you and Bax also!  Likewise, will send up some prayers!

Karen B, let’s hope and pray C.J.‘s injury is not as severe as it sounds.  Prayers, hugs and kisses.

Yay, Luna. Glad you’re doing okay.

That is super duper cute picture, btw.

Just heard from the vet.  The ortho surgeon says it is a fracture.  The tendon has pulled a little piece of bone from the larger wrist bone.  It’s a jumping type of injury which makes sense cuz C.J. is a jumper, for sure.  Got to weigh our options, surgical or splinting which is not as good as the surgery.  Looking at a really big bill, but, hey, it’s only money!  This is a PUG we’re talking about.  Well worth it to me, I love my pugs so! I’m sure you all can identify with me on that one!

Karen B, I know you will elect to have the surgery - you seem like a very caring person and well, our Pugs are worth it.  They are a lifetime comittement and we think of them as our kids and wouldn’t neglect our kids.  Please keep us updated.  Hugs and kisses to C.J.

Karen B - So sorry to hear about C.J.  I can relate because Benny is a jumper too and no matter how hard you try you just can’t keep them from bouncing off of things.  I will be thinking about you and C.J. and hope that whatever path you choose your little guy has a speedy recovery.  And a speedy recovery for your checkbook as well grin

Karen, thanks so much for your prayers!  I’m so sorry to hear about CJ’s diagnosis, but I know that he will heal quickly and be back to his old jumping self soon (although he needs to calm himself it seems…hehehe).  It sounds like a painful one, so I will pray for some comfort for him while he awaits his remedy.

Thanks for all the well wishes!  We probably will opt for surgery but the surgeon can’t do it for 7-10 days!  Vacation, ya know!  So will probably have it splinted til then.  Will keep you posted and let you know how my guy is doing.  Currently, I have him sedated so he will stay off the leg as much as possible and he’s just not himself.  The curl has left the tail, it hangs straight down!

Little Princess Luna,
You are a trooper, an inspiration and a joy.
I am so happy your eyes are doing well.
You are loved angel.

I know it’s tough to see C.J. sedated, but it is better than a more severe injury.  Hang in there and everything will be ok.

Karen B

Thanks, Sue! The up side to the sedative is C.J. is much easier to smooch on when he’s sleepy!  LOL!  Am keeping positive thoughts, and yes, all will be fine!
