Luna Health Update

Luna

Since we adopted Luna she has always been a medical mystery to all the vets we have taken her to. She never seems to get a classic case of anything.

Recently, her breathing issues have been perplexing vets and specialists alike. For the most part she is stabilized, but her breathing for the last year or so has definitely been labored. The inhaler she has been on has been helping a bit, but it hasn't cured things 100%. She also gets a cough (more of a traditional trachea collapse cough) from time to time. She has been experiencing that for the last few weeks so we have been going to the vet trying to tweak her meds to give her some comfort. The odd thing though is that Luna doesn't cough when at the vet. There is nothing we can do to make her cough so that vet can hear what her cough sounds like. She just stand on the examination table, wagging her tail acting like she is completely fine.

The first time this happened I was shocked. Mainly because she was coughing like crazy at home. The second time, I came with backup. I brought videos of Luna coughing just in case she acted like she was completely fine when we were there. Next time, we might have to do a video chat with the vet so he can see how Luna is at home.

Brian and the pugs

Luna was the first pug my wife “introduced” me to from OBP. We have a similar problem with Georgie, our 6 year old black pug. We had been taking him to Blissfield Michigan once a month for acupuncture treatment to help with the collapsing trachea issue that he came to us with. He was part of a package deal because Georgie had always been with Gracie and to separate them would not be good for Georgie, so we got a wonderful two for one deal.

We found this tremendous man who has been a vet for a long time but was willing to expand his vision into other areas of treatment long before we heard of him. I have to admit that I wasn’t totally sold on acupuncture but after over 2 years of semi regular inexpensive treatments, Georgie is doing really well. So well in fact that we have canceled appointments when it just hasn’t seemed necessary. This coming Monday will be my first “solo” trip without Nancy and one of the things we always do after our treatment is to stop at the McDonalds and get a couple of breakfast combos for the “adults” and Georgie gets two sausage patties for his very own.

The only trouble I will have is when I turn into that parking lot. I wonder if Georgie will remember his sausage patties treat? Knowing his penchant for food, I think he will but I will be doing the feeding. One of those many tough little situations that will get progressively better as time passes.

Have a good day everyone, and I’ll tell you how it went a little later on.

I LIKE the audio/video idea; works with electronics also grin  had to do same with a 950 Wurlizter - - it just would NEVER make those horrid static sounds when the ‘doc’ was in the house grin no matter how long he stayed or we played; we recorded it with earplugs in our ears—worked like a charm.
Bless you for taking excellent care of Luna et al.

Meiling had that same “Luna smile” on her face after we rushed her at midnight to the emergency vet when she went into an uncontrollable coughing fit!!!!! The vet thought I was the one who need medical treatment—- Meiling was just fine!!!  Next time, I will document the event!!!!

Could Ms.Luna be in love with her doctor? Hope doing a video will work and Luna can get comfort/relief. Will be holding you & Georgie in thoughts and prayer as you make the trip for the first time. Pug hugs from pastor sue & the Colorado 2

Could there be something in the household that causes Luna to cough, like an allergic reaction to something?  Not having a clue of what you do or don’t do, I’m thinking like air fresheners, cleaning solutions, laundry detergents, softeners, etc. I have found that these things will cause coughing, sneezing, etc., so I try to be as green as I can.

I’m a big believer that all the chemicals were consume by mouth, skin or air cause a lot of health problems, including antibiotics and hormones in food supplies.

Rotten dogs! All three of mine do the same thing. The vet said the adrenaline rush of being at the vet was the cause. Whether it’s an eye injury or cough, they all act perky. Like if they act ok, they won’t get a stick!
Isabelle is on her fourth med change for breathing. It seems like one will work for a while then stop. Currently, she’s on terbutaline sulphate and Tussigon. Meanwhile, I have a full bottle of theophylline that I can’t use. She’s done really well this winter so far (knock wood).
Hope you can find the right combo for Luna.
