Luna’s Laser Therapy

Luna

It has been about 6 months now that Luna began laser therapy. It started with a program of 3x per week for the first week, 2x per week the 2nd week and the 3rd week was just one day. Then the vet recommended we continue the program at 1x every 3 weeks. The laser treatment was for her neck and back. A while back (seems like a year ago or more...I have zero concept of time, so sorry) we discovered that Luna has several slipped discs in her back and neck. It is not operable and she frequently "shivers" in her rear legs. It is like a tremble or a twitch where one or both of her rear legs just shake as though she was cold or really afraid of something.

Well, the specialist doctors said that surgery would not help to correct but maybe acupuncture or laser therapy may be of help. Not being a fan of needles myself and knowing how wiggly Luna can be, we opted to try the laser therapy over the acupuncture. It seems to help her. I think she would probably do even better if we moved it to every 2 weeks instead of every 3 weeks and my goal is to do just that but that is a very big commitment and leaving an hour and a half early every other week seems like asking a lot of the workplace. Nonetheless we are making it work for now.

For those of you curious about what exactly the laser therapy is, I will describe. It is a sort of like a heated wand that they rub up and down the affected area (in Luna's case her neck and spine). The whole appointment only lasts about 10-15 minutes where they continually massage her neck & back with the laser wand. If they don't keep it moving it could burn which is why it is important for Luna to stay still and for the tech to keep a steady but busy hand. They will concentrate for 2-3 minutes on her neck then restart the timer and focus the next 2-3 minutes on her spine then back to her neck and this will go on a few times back and forth. If I had to compare the tool to something familiar to women, I would say it looks like what they use to sonogram a pregnant woman. But the wand is warm. (Never having had a baby I don't know if the sonogram wand is warm or not.)

Anyway, Luna seems to be responding well and the price seems reasonable ($200 for 6 sessions). It is not cheap but compared to some of the other stuff we've been through it seems cheaper than most other procedures.

Having been through this with Romeo, and now with Minnie, I am a big fan of laser/acupuncture therapy for the first few sessions, and then the acupuncture.  The needles are so thin that most of the time they are not even felt and if they are, it is a brief second.

I am glad Luna is responding, but please don’t discount acupuncture if the progress seems to slow down or take too long.

Corrine, I am completely with Sue VDB on the acupuncture/laser therapy although the laser you describe might be a bit different from what Georgie is getting.  His is a small wand connected to some type of transmitter and only is applied to certain spots for 15 seconds or so.  He had this third acupuncture/laser treatment on Friday and does not have to go back for a month because he is doing so well.  The biggest improvement we have noticed is his breathing.  Collapsed trachea be gone!  Well, not really, but it is so much improved he doesn’t breathe any deeper or struggling than the other two. And, he is walking so well and not stumbling like he had been.  Most of this result is from the acupuncture, so don’t rule that route out.  I realize every pug is an individual - boy are they ever - but from this side of the Mason/Dixon Line, we couldn’t be happier.  I was worried about the wiggle problem, too, but it turned out to be a non-issue.

Our cost is comparable as well, $110 for the first session and $50 each for succeeding ones, possibly 6 in all.

I hate to hear of what little Miss Looney Tunes is going through but hopefully this will be the answer for her.

Poor Luna :-(  I hope she continues to get better.  So, how long will she need the treatments, and will they have a “permanent” effect?

As for the sonogram, the wand isn’t the problem, it’s the lubricant they squeeze out onto you stomach.  I’ve always thought that they should have a way to keep the gel at room temp, at least. It’s been 21 years since I had my last baby, so things may have changed.  I have had a couple of sonograms in that area, and it was the same as always…“This is gonna be cold, now” lol

This really works and it will make Luna feel so much better. Many years ago I used this on my Great Dane. He was 8 years old at the time. I drove 150 miles round trip every Wed. for months to the only vet who did this. The cost was $10.00 per session - that is how long ago it was.

Oh Looney Tunes! I hope this helps you so much! Listen to Sue VDB and Huckle Luna. They know what they are talking about. smile

Speaking of sonograms, when I had mine with both girls, they pulled the gel from a ‘warmer’ thing so it isn’t cold anymore. smile  I know, you were all dying to know this! smile

I meant to say how I love this picture (my mind is slow) of Luna.  You just want to reach out and touch her.  She is so precious.

This is off the mark but would someone help me get rid of the song, Red Solo Cup, I use you up” out of my head.  Heard it yesterday and have been singing (not out loud) over and over and it won’t go away.  Help!

Thank you so much for posting this.  My Bichon Buffy just had a terrible episode where suddenly she couldn’t walk.  Literally overnight, one day she was fine and the next day her hind legs were completely non-functional.  I thought for sure she had blown a disc in her back, but xrays showed severe arthritis in both hips.  They prescribed a whole cocktail of drugs and injections I have to give her.  I am definitely going to look into laser therapy in my area first thing in the morning!  Thank you again for sharing Luna’s story.

Laser therapy is cheap down there! Isabelle gets a chiropractic adjustment and acupuncture for her arthritis and wobbly back end. It’s about $130 each session. But the results are amazing. Isabelle is antsy in the vet’s office as well and would pace with the needles in. Until I finally brought a chew with me. Then she plops right down on the table and just chews away. She gets Healthy Edible bones because they are always a favorite and she has few teeth.
I am not a fan of needles either and can’t watch when they put them in, but Isabelle doesn’t even notice them. And you just can’t argue with the results. From a crippled old lady to a dog that bunny hops up the deck steps now, it is worth every penny. Fortunately, my vet is open on Saturdays.

So happy to read she is responsive to this kind of therapy!  My pug Tina is going to see a specialist about her back tomorrow.  I’m sweating bullets that they will want to do surgery on her which I won’t be able to afford.  I hope this is a solution for Tina.

Lisa check into laser/acupuncture therapy.  My vet thought Minnie might need surgery and I took her to see my acupuncture vet and she is doing great.  Romeo had the same problem and laser/acupuncture did wonders for him as well.  I am a firm believer.
