No ‘Roid Rage Here

Luna

I realize that it is has been some time since I shared an update on the status of Luna's slipped discs in her back and neck. Well, after the CT scan with the dye injection, the neurologist gave us a choice of trying a pain killer or going to straight to Prednisone. At first we were going to try the pain killer only option since we had had experience with Solsey being on Prednisone. Solsey balloon right up on it and talk about an insatiable appetite! Whoa! Even for a pug, Solsey was like an eating machine! And a demanding little cuss, too! (I mean this in the most endearing way because we loved Sol dearly but boy, she would just stand in the kitchen and bark and whimper to be fed, shortly after she had just eaten. She was truly like a bottomless pit!) Anyway, I digress...

So, with the experience we had with Sol, we were not quick to jump at the chance to put Luna on Prednisone. So, we opted to take the prescription for the pain killer. Well, of course, this medicine had a hitch, too. It had to be administered in a tablet form. It could not be given in liquid or caplet or capsule form. It had to be filled at a compounding pharmacy and it was a human medicine, just fyi.

So, we took the prescription to our local human compounding pharmacy. The only one of 3 or so that is within 40 or so miles from our home. Well, there the pharmacist attempted to fill it in liquid form. I explained that the vet was emphatic that it could not be in liquid form (something about it being in liquid form only made it toxic to dogs). Then the pharmacist shared that medicine only comes in liquid or capsule form. Well, already having been forewarned by the neurologist that this was not the case, I just took the prescription and left. At this point, I was getting more & more frustrated as I had also called around to other compounding pharmacies and been given the run around over and over again.

So, to make a long story short (like that is possible now as the story is already long and I really not even close to done....) we gave it more thought and discussion and decided to put Luna on the Prednisone after all. So, we started with the every day with 2 doses a day for a week, then every day one dose a day for a week then every other day one dose a day. So, actually today will be her last dose. We took her in for a follow up and the neurologist said she was doing much better. Her back seem to be all better and her neck has seriously improved but is not entirely better. It is as good as it will get, though. The vet really wanted us to keep her crated unless she was eating or pottying and she was not walk (on leash) or jump (on furniture or up steps) at all. As a matter of fact they wanted us to carry her from her crate to eat then out to potty after that. Sadly, we knew there was no way most of that would not happen. First, we are not of a mind that it is even healthy for her to be crated for those extended periods of time even if for medical reasons but that of course is just our own personal philosophy. But we did limit her movement as best we could. We would lift her onto the sofa and put her back down so that she would not jump up or down. We would carry her on our hip if we knew we would be moving about the house knowing she would likely follow. And she is crated for a few hours at a time when no one is home. So, we while we didn't exactly follow doctor's orders, we did what we felt was reasonable and manageable.

As for the Prednisone, it made Luna a little more hungry and thirsty (and full bladdered, too) but it did not make her like her dearly departed sister Sol. And you hear about how steroids makes you crazy with indescribable rage and anger. Well, fortunately, they did not have that effect on Luna, either. (I hope you all know, that I know these are not the same type of steroids and I of course am just joking.) So, with little tongue in cheek humor, I just wanted to make it clear that Luna's steroids gave her a little extra weight but not of the muscle mass variety, either.

Luna is on the upswing and never lost her princess mentality for one minute.

Hey Miss Luna, you are doing awesome.  Glad to hear you are still the divine diva!
Docs, vets, pharmacists… they can be confusing at times!!
We have a compounding pharmacy here, I didn’t realize that they weren’t that common. (I live in a small town!!)

So glad to hear you are not keeping her crated as the Vet advised and using you own common sense. Little Luna does not belong in a crate all that time.

  Love and prayers Luna

So glad to hear Luna is doing better.  So hard to keep those little rascels quiet, although I think sometimes they do realize and take less chances themselves.  I think you ALWAYS do what’s best for your gang!!!!

YAY Miss Beautiful Luna!!!  Corrine, I totally agree with you re: the crate situation.  Sometimes we know what is best for our fur babies and have to take the information given coupled with our knowledge of our babies and make the best decision that is right for us.  I did the same thing with Baxter and that stupid halo collar.

I was giggling so hard about the roid rage and bulky muscles; no bulk on our Diva - long, lean, and a Princess Machine!!!  Love it!

Sue VDB:  Tomorrow is Romeo’s appointment, yes?  How has he been?  What are your thoughts re: next steps?  Please know you both are still in my thoughts and prayers and kisses to precious Romeo!

Corrine, congratulations for following your own good common sense.  Little Luna looks good and it is great news that she is doing so much better.  Looney would have been miserble crated all the time, and I don’t believe that would have been healthy for her either.

Heather, yes Romeo goes to the vet tomorrow.  While I had Minnie at the vet yesterday for a follow up on her broken toes I told Jim how well Romeo was doing and said it was like I had a bad dream, woke up and everything is fine.  He was surprised that Romeo is not displayiny any symptoms of vestibular.  I tell you, keeping St. Francis on speed dial is a great thing.  With all the prayers going up for Romeo I’m certain that has made all the difference.  Thank you again dear people.

Thank you for the update on the princess. I would not have been able to keep her crated either. So glad she is doing better. Pip is on prednisone twice a day every other day for his allergies. He was on temeril-p which I preferred but the vet is out and it’s on back order ‘indefinitely’. He still itches his face so I don’t know if I’m doing the right thing. :( Anyway!!

Still praying for Romeo! Will be thinking of you Sue VDB tomorrow a.m.!

I have to start by saying that, since my “Princess” has been all about doing her booty twirls on every rug in the house this summer (I have her anals checked & cleared regularly too) - my first thought when reading “‘Roid Rage” was a hemmorhoid situation for one of the pugs.  (I’m out to lunch most days - it’s the HEAT!!)  Anyway - good to hear that Luna’s back and neck have had good response to the Prednisone and that she’s been such a smart little cookie in helping you to care for her.  I sometimes think that vets think of us “parents” as fellow vets; keeping our pets in a kennel not a home.

Sue VDB:  (what is VDB anyway???  I’m betting it’s Vanderberg.  Hoping all is well with Romeo’s visit tomorrow. I have several St. Francis statues in my house.  I’ve always liked the idea that someone is watching over the critter who can’t speak for themselves to ask for help and love (in the way we can).  How did Minnie break her toes??  You’re really running your own clinic it sounds. . . .  I’ll stop whining about eye drops for Bella’s mattery eyes and antiseptic cream for her scratching sores, and cleaning wipes for her itchy feet.  Summertime does nothing for either of us though.

Guess that’s why we like to congregate at OBP.  I think it takes special people to love and take care of pug-babies.  And they say that poodles are high-maintenance!  Gotta be referring to the styling salon!!

Mary, you crack me up re: the hemmeroids!  LOL LOL LOL

Also, I must now go search out statues of St. Francis, what a wonderful idea, thank you!!!

mary castagnoli, you are close.  VDB stands for Van De Berghe. Oh, and I don’t envy the eye drop routine one bit.  That would really be a struggle at my house.

Haven’t got a clue how Minnie broke her toes.  Came home from a church concert, and two hours later she was hopping on three legs…not a yelp or a whimper.

Heather, I have a fairly large statue of St. Francis on my fireplace in the family room where I spend most of my time with all the babies. I also have a small placque on my wall.

Luna takes the sweetest pictures.  Wish I could just scoop her up into my arms.  Corrine, I’m so glad to hear you stand up for the babies over the “authority” of medical science.  Sometimes we just KNOW.

I have to admit to stupidity regarding ‘compounding pharmacy.’  I get the idea but if I’ve heard that term before, I’m not aware of it.  (Dumb question??) - how do you find one?

Mary - I am howling - “booty twirls”.  Is that with or without a pole?  wink

Pug hugs
Huckle chuckles
& Cooper’s an occasional pooper

I just love this picture of Luna had to save it for my wall paper when I had Ollie treated for heartworm they wanted him to stay in a crate only to come out for potty breaks and to eat but I could not do that I think you know what will work with Luna better then any one I think I can say we know our dogs better then anyone Corrine I think you are a excellent mommy

Hey, Huckle, glad to hear Cooper the super pooper is still in the mix!

I guess I’ll have to find a St. Francis statue too!  C.J. Had been limping on his left front paw again…that was the one they said was broken a couple years back…Dr. wanted to put him on a short course of Prednisone and antibiotics.  Started the Prednisone and talk about a spun out puggy…He was stting staring at walls, wandering aimlessly, on high-alert status, barking at everything and then the bladder thing that was aforementioned…that was after only three doses…Okay, so I decided to take him off it, just do the antibiotic…Hope I’m doing the right thing but the Prednisone just made him spaced out!

Glad to hear Luna finished hers and is better…

Updates on our other puggies, please, as you get them!

Huckle:  I did not properly describe Bella’s maneuvers.  Should have said her “booty-scootin’” - no poles, no dancing . . . this is definitely NOT an art-form and I don’t know how to get her to stop.  She’s just one big ball of intermittant itches this summer.  But again, I’m not complaining.  All is deal-able and non-scary.  But my workmates still marvel at our daily routine to keep her eyes clear, her feet soothed, etc.  I’m over not having any grandchildren - I’m 60 and have my own little baby to tend!!  (my son is relieved)

Mary and Huckle, you have me roaring in laughter over here…Hhahahahahahahahahahahahha…

Mary, I’m so with you…Over the past 3 weeks I’ve said “I’m not having children” at least a dozen times.  I’m thinking fur babies are about the highest level of mommying I can handle at this stage of the game, LOL LOL.

Karen B :-( So so sorry to hear about CJ’s paw and his spaced out reaction to the ‘roids :-(.  I sure do hope he’s not limping VERY soon and that it doesn’t resurface.  He’s on the thoughts and prayers list (as are all of you each and every day!).

Karen B.

Thank you Heather!

Karen B. hope CJ’s paw is feeling better ahe is also on the prayer and good thought list

Thanks sue!

And by the way, mary c., I have to admit that I, at first, thought the same thing about the ‘roids, cuz that’s what I’ve always called ‘em!  And booty twirls, too funny!  I just have this picture in my mind…LOL!
