Things you can’t say to Baby Benny

Baby Benny

Like most pugs Benny is very alert and listens closely when you speak.  You might not even be speaking directly to him, but he always has an ear out listening to the words you are speaking.  This is all well and good, except for the fact that there are a few words that you can not say to Benny unless you really mean it.  Here are a few.

Hungry

Use this word in any sentence and Benjamin will not calm down until you feed him.  I think this all started because when him and Henry were pups I always asked them “Are you hungry?” before I fed them.  Why?  I don’t know.  The answer was always a resounding YES.  I must have asked them too many times because now you can’t even use the word hungry in any sentence without Benny thinking it is time to eat.

Breakfast, Dinner, Snack or Treat

Unless you are feeding Benny all of these words are off limit.  Say any of them and he automatically assumes it is feeding time.  It has gotten so bad that we had to start referring to things like our dinner as “D”.  We’ll say things like, “So what’s for D?”

Wanna

Benjamin assumes that any sentence that has the word wanna is a question and his answer is always YES.  This probably came from me asking them, “Do you wanna go for a walk?” or “Do you wanna go for a car ride?”  So if Benny hears the word “wanna” he automatically assumes he is going for a walk or a ride in the car.  Even if you ask him something like “Wanna get a bath?”  He still assumes he is going to do something fun.  He’s definitely an optimist.

What are your pug’s favorite words?

Hahahaha!!! Wee Lola is exactly the same way! I cannot say Hungry, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Adventure, Friend, Greyhounds…the list goes on! And for some reason, she goes mad barking at me when I say “Monkeyboots” or “PBJammies” (don’t ask!).

Sukey was an extremely hyper puppy. Too calm her down I would tell her a story with all her key words scattered throughout the tale. I remember one story I told her about “going swimming” and and momma let her float on her “raft” while eating “pizza”. Her expression was classic! Her eyes were so big and glazed over thinking of the possibility. I think she held her breath for 4 seconds. lol

HAH!! My pugs are just as smart.
They know Hungry, Walk, GO, Puppies, “Dont look” (which is in reference to any kind of animal on TV)... Chewey (pig skin twists), treat and meaty bone are just the ones that pop into my head.

Bentley doesn’t even always wait for us to say one of those words. If he wants a chewey.. he sits beneath the DVD shelf that we have and cries or yips because we usually keep the half chewed ones up on the top. smile

Damn those smart dogs!!

Yup…Pugs are the smartest ones around, that’s for sure.  Bacon is a big one in our house.  The boys get beggin strips only as a treat when I am leaving the house.  They are so well adjusted that sometimes they are pushing me out the door to get their coveted bacon.  No separation anxiety around here.  So, “Ready for a Bacon?” produces a flurry of pug excitement.  Ride, walk, outside, binkie (one of their toys)...just a few off the top of the head.

Oh that’s funny.

Frankie knows cookie and bye bye are words for hyper excitement.  Also ‘Daddy’s home!’ means cry hysterically and run around like a maniac.

Oh yea! I forgot one MAJOR one!
PEANUT BUTTER!!
My pugs get a tsp of peanut butter every morning as a treat.. and if you say the words.. they go FLYING into the kitchen and wait at the pantry! HAHA

Pugs are the smartest pooches out there!
Sleighbelle knows hungee (instead of hungry);chewie (a treat); bye-bye (I have to spell it if she’s not going for a ride in the car); and Uncle Stevie (my brother, whom she adores). And of course, peanut butter!  A spoonful of this treat makes the girls nuts!  Birdy is deaf, but when she sees her sissy going bonkers, she knows that there is something going on and she gets into the action by barking…she’s not sure why, but she trusts her big sister to steer her in the right direction!

Oh, my goodness… the list just goes on & on! The biggies in our house are: eat, E-A-T, go outside, go bye-byes, cookie(s),gramma & grampa, nummie-nummies, night-night, get your babies. Anything preceeded by “wanna”! Of course, the way they turn their heads makes it even more precious!

These posts are wonderful—isn’t it true that these babies are too smart? We also have to spell. Lola and Grace’s…Uncle Nicki (they adore him) we say UN now or they are too disapointed. brekkie (breakfast) hungry, wanna go, puppy, baby, umm-nummie-nummie, cheese, cookie, biscuit, squirrel, bird, airplane, Brother (my grown son who they also adore), are you cold?, water, every name of every toy, chewie, go pee-pee. They know go poo, but seem to be embarrassed by it and don’t want me to tell them that, although peeing seems to be an event that they love to perform and want me to watch and applaud. There are words they know and don’t like: if they hear ‘nails’ in a sentence like get your nails clipped or paint your nails (OK,I paint Lola’s nails pink and she hates it). You cannot say bath. If I run bathwater they disapear—which feels weird when they never ever leave your side. They walk into the bath with me and I turn around and they are history. ‘Going to see the doctor’ doesn’t make them happy. They do love to hear ‘sleepy-nite-nite’ and the best ever: Daddy’s home!
Love,
Kelly

Baxton knows hungry, bone, walk, car ride, and of course treat! He also recognizes grandma and grandpa when my parents are coming over or we are going there! He knows the names of his fellow dog family members.

“Wanna” is a big word in our house, too.  I don’t even have to finish the sentance - all I have to say is “Do you wanna?” and Rocky and Adrian start jumping for joy and running circles around me. It doesn’t matter what they “wanna”, they just prefer to receive rather than give.
I use the word, “Suppertime” to indicate breakfast, lunch and dinner.  It all started when I would sing the song “Suppertime” (from the Broadway musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”) to them when it was time to eat.  I still sing for their supper, but all that’s needed is the word, “suppertime” and they go into spasms of glee!  Also, when I leave for work, I say, “Go see Daddy!”  and they hightail it up the stairs and sit outside the bedroom till he emerges to greet them. Cutie-Patooties, that’s what they are!

Ours are all the usual ones, especially about treats, snacks and eating.  But I have another one that always brings Bennie running, and that’s when I call out, “Come watch Jeopardy with me!”  That’s when we cuddle together on the couch and watch good old Alex Trebek!

My pug, Marti, is pretty much on par with the above pugs. She knows the standard treat, park, Kong, dinner, and of course, “potty?” She also knows “look” and “kitty” because I always try to get her to see squirrels and cats outside (not a fan, by the way). Also impressive is that she knows the names of her stuffed animals. I can say Santa and off she goes to find her stuffed St. Nick.

My pug Henry is only 5.5 months old, but already he knows the words “hungry,” “dinner,” “snack,” “walk,”
“park,” “Petsmart,” “the vet,” “daycare,” “crate,” “Daddy,” and of course, anything with “wanna” or “gonna go”.  I love the way he tilts his head and then starts running around in excitement when we say any of those words!  Also, we can’t open the cupboard where we keep his food until it is time for him to eat, otherwise he will sit near his food dish and cry (even if he just ate 5 minutes before!).  He’s also pretty smart about knowing when we want to leave the house… he hides under the bed!

LOL!!! LOVE THIS!!!

“Cookie” - or anything that ends in E…
“Out” or “go” in any sentence creates a charge to the front door! And now when I go out to my balcony or try to go down the stairs they are charging for the door and looking to go out (they used to get an “e” when they went out and did good boys but I have scaled it down to in the am when I leave and at night before bedtime) - If they get past me they will run down to the yard - lift a quick leg and rush right back up to get their “e”!!!
I thought it was my bad parenting but by the sounds of it all pugs are food obsessed! Did they get the I’m not hungry yet gene somehow??? My boyfriend and I sometimes feel like we are being looked at as food! They will just sit and stare at us plotting…hehehe

My pugs are the same way some of there words are walk, car ride, whos here (they both run to the door barking), treat, cookie (what we called biscuits when they were puppies), something (what we called treats at some time or another), wanna go, and so on.

We have decided that Ruby speaks Klingon.  And in Klingong “Ruby, would you like a chihuahua for christmas?” sounds like “Ruby, would you like to come with us?”.  “What are you noticing?” roughly tranlates to “Well, are you coming?” - both of which elicite a lot of trembling excitement and a race to the door.  She will run in circles around the car until I get there and open a door so she can hop in.

Of course, supper/food/hungry/treat.  If you mention “carrot” she will stand with her nose on the fridge door until you open it.  She then presses her face against whichever crisper holds the coveted baby carrots.

At a certain time every day she gets beligerant with me, then goes and gets her toy squirrel so I know it is “time for a nap?” which sends her running to the couch.  At night when I turn off the lamp she knows it is time for bed and she races me upstairs.  Now I can’t turn any light on or off without her trying to herd me to the stairs and up to bed!

Do I have the only Pug that’s a picky eater? When we feed her, she guards her bowl from the other two dogs, but won’t eat right away. Usually she snacks on it for awhile, but never finishes it. I wouldn’t know what to do with a good eater.

THIS IS SO FUNNY..MY 6 MO OLD FEMALE PUG ALWAYS GETS A “GOLDFISH” CRACKER FOR A TREAT. God help you if you mention the word goldfish. Now we have to say the word “G” or she stands in the kitchen looking at the box until we give her some. lolol

OMG, this is so true. As soon as i say “Momma’s going to work!” my two girls run to their crates and sit inside to wait for a treat. They could care less that I am going to close the door to their crates or that I am leaving, they just want the treat. Unbelievable! =)
