Luna vs The Monkey

Luna has a stuffed monkey that is as big as she is that she loves to shake and drag around the house.  Instead of a squeaker the monkey has what we refer to as a “screecher” inside it.  Occasionally, while tossing the monkey about, Luna will make the monkey screech.  Luna hates it when she makes the monkey screech!  She immediately stops playing with it and usually runs away.  It’s funny, but sorta sad.  It is like she feels like she hurt the monkey by playing too rough.

We actually have a little video of Luna playing with the monkey and then running away.  Check it out.  This is the first video on the Pug Blog so bear with us.  We are definitely amateur videographers.

Another One Bites the Dust

Another one bites the dust

Here lies another fallen tug toy.  This one lasted all of about 5 minutes.  It seems a sturdy tug toy with rope that is not too thick for pug mouths, and lots of limbs for multiple pugs to grab on to is hard to find.  The only tug toy that has lasted for more than one game is the all rope kind with two knots at each end.  However, all of the pugs like to play tug at the same time so we need something with at least three ends, otherwise there is sure to be conflict.

Benny playing tug

Part of the reason, tug toys break so easily is because Benjamin is a fierce tug player.  When playing tug Benjamin means business and he will drag Henry and Luna around the yard and shake the rope as hard as possible to try and have the other two let go.  While Benjamin will play tug with Henry and Luna, he prefers a solo match with a human competitor.  He pulls, shakes, growls and does everything in his power to win.  And if he doesn’t win he has been known to be a little bit of sore loser.  He just can’t stand it when he is not the top dog.

Bah, Humbug!

Henry helping decorate the tree

Last weekend, while trimming the tree, we had three restless pugs under our feet.  Henry was sitting ever so still watching us put up ornaments so we thought we would have a little fun with him.  We wrapped him all up in a festive ribbon.  Henry just sat there under amused by our antics.  The cat, as you can see in the background, had a little bit more fun with the ribbon.  She was racing around the house, hiding behind boxes and pouncing on the ribbon.  Henry could sure learn a thing or two about the holiday spirit from his sister, the cat!

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday

We celebrated a birthday in the house last week and Benjamin got in on the action by wearing the birthday bow.  (Look close and you will see the little red bow on his head)  For some reason, Benjamin really enjoyed wearing the bow.  He wore it the whole time presents were being opened.

Benjamin’s toe is doing a bit better.  We are still trying to keep him calm and “off his paws.”  It has been hard trying to keep Benny quiet while Henry and Luna are little bundles of energy.  Henry and Luna have been keeping their normal walk schedule and we have been taking Benjamin on his own special short walks.  Despite his injury, Benny always wants to walk farther, but, I think he is enjoying his solo walks.

Ouch

Benjamin on bed rest

Thursday afternoon, was just like any other day.  After I got off work, everyone went out in the yard to play and burn off some pent up energy.  While Benjamin, Henry and Luna romp and roll around the yard, I usually sit on a bench and watch them play.  Most of the time they chase each other around the bench.  When they play chase,  they always have to circle something, I think it is pug law.

Benjamin and Henry are not the pups they once were, so after about 5 minutes of intense running, the gang laid down in the grass for some much needed rest.  When I was packing up the toys to head back into the house, I noticed a puddle of blood in the yard.  What?  I was shocked, where did all this blood come from?  With the amount of blood, I was sure someone must have a gaping wound somewhere.  I glanced over at the the boys and Luna and they all looked fine.  The blood must have come from the cat then.  I checked the cat and she was fine.  So I went back to look at the pugs and sure enough Benjamin’s toenail was bleeding.

We got Benjamin cleaned up and put stiptic powder on his toenail to stop the bleeding.  After a few minutes we were able to stop the bleeding and after the bleeding stopped that is when Benjamin started limping horribly.

First thing Friday morning, we took Benjamin to the vet.  We were unsure what they would be able to do to help him, but since he was limping so bad we knew we had to have the vet take a look.  It turns out, Benjamin almost ripped his toenail off while playing.  He must have hit the nail on the bench while he was chasing his brother.  The vet said that his toenail was ripped about 40% off.  If the toenail is ripped 60% or more they usually remove the entire toenail, but lucky for Benjamin he would not need this procedure.  The vet’s main concern was infection.  So Benjamin had the honor of getting a shot of antibiotics and he remains on antibiotics for the next few days.

Also, to aid in healing, Benjamin was put on bed rest.  Well, not really bed rest, but we were given strict orders to limit his activity.  So we had a quiet weekend at home and did our best to keep Baby Benny still.  Which, even when he is feeling bad, is no easy task.

All in all, it looks like he is feeling much better.  He has a little bit of limp left, but he is walking much better.  In a few days, he should be better than new.

The Halloween Fiasco

Benjamin & the girl

In all of the after Halloween rush of the Pugfest in Atlanta, announcing the Costume Contest winners and selling the 2007 Owned By Pugs Calendars, I almost forgot to blog about the Halloween fiasco that occured.  In the photo you can see what we refer to as “the girl.”  It is a little statue in the background behind Benjamin in the photo.  Well, after we made our rounds through the neighborhood with the pugs in their 3 little pigs costumes, we came home to answer the door for trick or treaters.  At first we didn’t have too many and we didn’t really need to man the door.  Unfortunately, “someone” got careless and left the bowl of goodies on “the girl’s” tray.  Of course, Benjamin the curious little pug, got to sniffin’ and smellin’ and tried to get to the goodies.  He ended up pulling the girl over and her arm broke off and pieces of ceramic and Skittles went everywhere.  Fortunately, no one was hurt but “the girl” is beyond repair.

The broken girl

Amusing side note to this story.  “The girl” was a Christmas gift this past year.  Henry was sleeping when she was opened and assembled.  When Henry woke up, he was shocked to find the lady in his home and barked at her confused by her short stature and bewildered as to how she snuck into the house.  It was quite a riot.
