Are You Alive?

Henry sitting with the scarecrow

Henry is somewhat of a spoiled little boy. We can’t so much as take a potty break from him. Whenever anyone goes to the bathroom, he will assume that if you are going to sit on the potty, then he has your undivided attention and that is time for Henry lovin’. Well, yesterday we built a scarecrow for Halloween. (It isn’t your traditional type scarecrow, it is a Baltimore Oriole baseball fan.) The scarecrow is sitting in a beach chair in front of the house. Well, Henry isn’t convinced that the scarecrow isn’t alive. Henry will go sit at the scarecrow’s feet and patiently wait for the scarecrow to pet him. He got a little board waiting for the petting, so he just laid down instead. Henry’s patient. If he thought the scarecrow would eventually give in, then he would sit and wait all day. I guess he will have to wait until the scarecrow needs to use the restroom.

She Learns!

Down

When little Luna came to us, she knew nothing. OK, maybe not “nothing.” She had some street smart skills - like scavenging through garbage cans, but she didn’t know any basic simple commands like “sit,” “down,” “off,” etc. She didn’t have a clue about walking on a leash and she even jumped up on table tops because she just didn’t know any better. Well, fortunately, we have managed to undo some of her bad habits, such as the standing on table tops and leash walking. (She’s not perfect at the whole leash thing but at least she pretty much stays on the path, now.) Through much training and practice, she has mastered the sit command.

However, what we are really pleased to brag about today, though, is that for the first time, she has achieved the down command on a semi-regular basis. We used to think that it was impossible for her to ever get a grasp on this because she always seemed to want to keep her derriere in the air. Well, at long last, she has gained a clue to the command of “down.” We wouldn’t say she has aced it quite yet, but it did seem like a huge breakthrough. If you have ever seen “The Miracle Worker” it was similar to the scene where Annie Sullivan helps Helen Keller learn the sign for “water.” As a matter of fact, we giggled amongst ourselves that she CAN learn! Talk about teaching an old dog new tricks! It can be done, but believe you me, it is so much easier when they are puppies!

Got Mail?

Inspecting the mail

The pugs & cat have grandparents in Maryland.  G’ma & G’pa (as the pugs affectionately call them) sent a special care package to all the furry grandkids that arrived today.  Baby Benny sniffed out the goods.  He even chewed a little hole in the box!

Look what Benny did to the box

Once the box was open, they discovered a goodie bag each.  The bags for the boys had vampires and the one for Luna was a little witch.  Cupid’s had a little kitty cat on hers, which we found quite appropriate.

The goodie bags

Though we enjoyed the bags, the dogs (and Cupid) more so appreciated the items inside the bags.  There was a little pumpkin for each of the little pumpkins and within the pumpkins were yummy treats of dog and cat variety.

Thanks G’ma & G’pa!  It is so much fun for the puggies when they get mail.  Oh, to lead the life of a pug and just to get fun mail and no bills!  Who says Halloween is just for children?  The pugs are all ready for Halloween.  Be sure to keep an eye out for the unveiling of their crazy costumes.  And don’t forget to submit your pug in costume photos to our Halloween Costume Contest.  Perhaps your pup will get cool prizes by mail, too.  Then your pug could also enjoy receiving a special delivery!

Passed Out

Benjamin sleeping

Since the weather has been cooler, we have been able to get back to our normal walking routine and we have been able to get in a couple of long walks.  We took a walk this weekend that was a little over 3.5 miles.  I kept waiting for them to get tired, but they just kept trotting along showing no signs of slowing down.  They had a great time and when we got home they still had enough energy for a game of chase!  Most of our walks are only about a mile long, but about once a week we try to get in a long walk.  All of them really seem to enjoy breaking up the normal walking routine with an extra long trek.

I love this time of the year because when the pugs are well exercised they are well behaved during the day when I am working.  They don’t bark at every little noise and they are content to just nap until I am off work.  It is amazing the difference a little bit of exercise makes.

This shot is of Benny napping while I am working.  Benny is an extreme kind of guy.  There is really no in between for him.  He is either running and romping around the house or he is completely passed out.  At almost 5 years old he is still a bundle of energy.  Its just now his bursts are a little bit shorter than they were when he was a pup.

Bark For a Cure

Benjamin in his Bark for a Cure shirt

October is breast cancer awareness month and Benjamin, Henry & Luna thought they would show their support with their new Bark For a Cure t-shirts.  Luna loves to prance around in anything pink so she was quite happy with her new shirt.  The boys on the other hand, weren’t so happy with their new pink duds.  But after I explained things to them, they decided they were manly enough to sport their new pink shirts.

Loving Life

Henry enjoying the cool weather

The last couple days have been cool here in FL and Henry is in his glory.  We haven’t needed to run the air conditioner these last few days, so we were able to open the windows and the doors that lead to the screened-in part of of the pool deck.  It has been great to get some fresh air circulating in the house and the boys and girls (Luna & Cupid the cat) love having the doors open and being able to go in and out on their own.

The opening shot is of Henry relaxing on his outdoor bed.  And of course, where Henry is Luna is sure to follow.

Halloween Costumes

Halloween is quickly approaching and we are putting the finishing touches on Benjamin, Henry & Luna’s Halloween costumes.  Which got me wondering how many other people dress their pugs up for Halloween.  Let us know by voting in the poll.  Also, if your pug is dressing up for Halloween, be sure to snap a picture and enter it into our Halloween Costume Contest!
