How does your pug cool down?

There is a severe heat wave across many parts of the country, so we are interested in knowing how your pug stays cool or cools down after a walk or a hard day of play.

Joe Cool

Henry, Joe Cool

While this summer has not been that hot by Florida standards, it is still quite toasty.  So, we take our walks early in the morning and later at nights.  This is Henry after a longer walk in the evening.  As we’ve blogged earlier, he is definitely the brains of the pug trio.  To cool down he will lay on the tile floor in the kitchen.  Benny will lay on the rug or pillow or even on one of the throw rugs in the kitchen but never on the cool tile.  Because of his “cool tile strategy,” Henry is usually the one that stops panting first.  Henry is not only “King of the Yard” but his is also “King of the Smarts.”

Do you want to pet my monkey?

Luna sleeping with her monkey

This is Luna sleeping with her “pet monkey.”  The funny thing about this monkey is that it is bigger than Luna.  It also has a unique “squeaker.”  The noise maker inside the monkey is more like a “screecher.”  It screeches like a monkey.  The arms and legs of the monkey are about 2 feet long and Luna loves to drag the monkey around by it’s limbs.  Then she’ll shake the monkey relentlessly and when she is all done abusing the monkey, she takes the monkey up to bed and cuddles up with him.  So, while it may look like Luna loves this little monkey, does she really?  Or is it a love/hate relationship?  Is the monkey on Luna’s back or is Luna on the monkey’s back?  I think they take turns.

Thanks, Luna!

Waiting for a treat

To help manage Luna’s dry eye issues, she gets drops in her eyes three times a day.  The little girl is a trooper and she allows us to put the drops in her eyes without putting up too much of a fuss.  To reward her for being such a good girl, we give her a small treat after she has received her drops.

The boys caught on to this and started begging to get eye drops so that they could get a treat.  So to be fair, after Luna gets her drops, everyone gets a treat.

One of Luna’s eye medications needs to be refrigerated and it has gotten to the point that as soon as Benjamin and Henry hear me get the drops out of the fridge they come running for a treat.  Furthermore, they egg Luna on and tell her to go get her drops so they can get a treat!

Poor, Luna.  She sure did get the raw end of the deal.

Thanks!

Too Hot To Walk

Benjamin, Henry and Luna on their walk

We are well into summer and it is hot and humid here in Florida.  Nothing that isn’t typical of this time of year, but it is still super hot.  Because of the heat, we have had to adjust our walks.  Our normal schedule is to go for a short walk at lunch time, a short walk before dinner and a long walk after dinner.  This has been a good schedule for the boys and it seems to work well with Luna.  The three walks get the gang their necessary exercise which makes for happy and well behaved pugs.  However, since it has been so hot lately, we don’t dare venture out for our midday or before dinner walk.  Instead we take a long walk in the morning around 6:30 AM and another long walk in the evening around 9 PM.  Everyone loves the 9 PM walk, but the morning walk is another story.  At that time in the morning, everyone is snuggled under the covers and none of them have any interest in going for a walk.  However, by the time we hit the end of the driveway, they are their happy little selves and ready to go on their trot around the neighborhood.

Standing Guard

Benjamin waiting for his turkey to be cooked

Each week when I cook the turkey for the gang’s food, Benjamin parks himself on the mat by the stove.  He stays there the entire time I am cooking and while he relaxes a bit he is always alert and ready to pounce on any morsel I may drop.

While I love Benjamin and enjoy doing things with him, I wish he didn’t try to help as I cooked turkey.  Cooking about 11 packages a ground turkey is a tedious process and I could sure use the extra foot room while I am working.  But that is where the little man likes to lay, so I just work around him.

Luna and Henry aren’t as interested in the cooking process.  They prefer to lounge in the living room while I cook.
