Is your pug a picky eater?

Darci and Abbey the pug wrote in wondering about the eating habits of other pugs.  It seems Abbey will eat just about anything and Darci was wondering if all pugs were that way.

Well, I can certainly say that Henry will eat ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING!  I have yet to come across anything that he will turn down.

Benjamin, has turned down a few things, but for the most part he eats everything as well.  He won’t eat lettuce or cucumbers and he isn’t real fond of spinach.  However, if it is high in carbs he will devour it (pumpkin bread!).

Luna, on the other hand, has quite a discerning palette.  Just the other day she turned down a graham cracker and I must add this tickled the boys pink.  She doesn’t particularly care for Cheez-Its either and she never eats her broccoli.

What about you?  Does your pug eat everything?  Or does he turn some food items down?  Tell us about in the comments and vote in the poll.

Is your pug a picky eater?

Mine won’t eat mushrooms.  They get all excited, get it in their mouth...swish it around a moment and spit it out.  Then they walk around, sporting a disappointed look :D

My pugs used to eat anything and everything that hit the floor, but then I started them on a salmon-based kibble...which is excellent for their coats...now the little darlings turn up their noses at anything that DOESN’T have fish in it!  I’ve even had to switch to dog treats made with fish because the standard Milkbone just won’t do.

OMG!! My female wont eat Cheeze-its either!
How strange!!

My male HATES bananas and black olives… He will spit them out and then he wont trust me again till the next day and sniffs anything I try to give him! HAHA

My Riley will eat just about anything...he doesn’t even take the time to figure out what it is half the time.  Baxter, on the other hand, his palette has changed as he’s aged.  He used to love bananas and carrots, but won’t eat them now.  They both love grapes and american cheese.  Baxter is always cautious and takes his time investigating exactly what he’s being offered!

Heather, please be careful giving your pugs
grapes or raisins. They are toxic to dogs.
I didn’t know this until just a short time
ago.

Hi Brenda,

I’ve actually heard of this before and researched it...it’s only toxic if they eat a multitude of them at one time...sugar overload.  Thanks for your concern…

Heather

Hmmm...now you made me paranoid so I looked again and seems there’s new info now about a toxin in them...strange.  My boys are 8 and 9 years old and have had a few grapes here and there their whole life…

Guess I’ll have to look into it some more as information changes..thanks again.

When Benjamin & Henry were pups we used to give them grapes.  Then we heard they were bad for dogs so we stopped.  Then we heard they were OK and then they weren’t.  We just heard so much conflicting information that we decided not to give them grapes anymore.

Now if they ever say that pumpkin bread is bad for dogs, Benjamin is going to demand a complete investigation with a full report.

I think I better get that pumpkin bread recipe b/c Bax and Ri are NOT going to be happy that momma is now way too paranoid to ever give them their grapies again!

Here is the recipe for all those out there that aren’t too fond of cooking.

- Head to your local Bob Evans for Dinner during the Fall

- Get pumpkin bread with your meal

- Ask the waitress for a few extra slices to take home

Now, if Baxter & Riley take to the pumpkin bread like Benny you are going to have to be real careful on where you store the pumpkin bread in your house.  When I let the pugs out the crate, the first thing Benny does is smell my hands.  He will know right away that I had pumpkin bread and if he smells it he will not rest until he has some.

If you like to bake, we will have to talk to Ann.  She has a great pumpkin bread recipe that Benny loved.

Meimei used to not like bananas - but since we started buying organic - she loves them!  She spit out celery once, but I tried it again with her and she took her time with it and then begged for more.

Miko, my poor girl, would eat anything we gave her - sadly we can’t give her much because of allergies (and intolerences for preservatives).

hello.. i love your blogs about your babies… i’m about to try your special meal diet on my 2 pugs next week. i would just like to ask: in one of your blogs i saw that you cooked the ground turkey already for the week. then do you just add the other stuff (yogurt, oatmeal.. etc..)when they are about to eat? thank you for your time on this.! more pug power.

Since we don’t have Bob Evans here...wonder if Ann will share her recipe.  If Benny gave it paws up, I’m sure the boys will love it!!

Mine picks through her mixed dog food to pick out the bits that she likes.  The stuff she doesn’t like will end up on the floor, all around her bowl.

My pugs don’t really like any green food (lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, etc.) Other than that, all food is pretty much fair game!

I am shocked that there are so many discerning pug pallets out there! Someone once told me because of their flat faces, that pug taste buds were not as fine-tuned. My pug, Belle will eat just about anything -including rocks and tree bark - if we’re not careful! We’ve starting chopping up baby carrots and using those as treats instead of cookies!

I am sorry to say that I don’t exactly have a recipe for pumpkin bread...I am a baker that flies by the seat of her pants!  What I did was convert a people pumpkin bread recipe to one suitable for pugs (and people who don’t want sugar and fat in their foods!  Find a pumpkin bread recipe and start substituting:  Whole wheat, buckwheat and oat flour for the white flour (oat flour is just oatmeal ground up in a blender), applesauce substitutes for the sugar and fat, yogurt and milk to moisten it, eggs for leavening and the flax seed and wheat germ for an extra nutritional kick.  It takes a little experimentation, but as long as the batter looks like people pumpkin bread batter, it will work.  Pour into loaf pans and bake at 350 degrees for about 45-50 minutes.

Baby Benny’s Pugkin Bread

Contains whole wheat flour, buckwheat flour,
oat flour, pureed pumpkin, eggs, milk, flax seed,
wheat germ, yogurt and unsweetened
applesauce

My pug Bennie is almost 3 years old, and to date I have not seen him turn down any food.
And in fact, he has often eaten non-food items such as kleenex, paper, feathers, and even once a pen cap. We’re working to learn not to be a pug vacuum cleaner.

My Hailey will eat just about anything if she is able to chew or swallow it. but she knows when her food limit has been reached and doesn’t consantly visit her regular food dish. the one thing that worries me with her begging at the counters while you are cooking is that ONIONS are bad for dogs and they always end up on the floor when you chop them!

wow… is it really healthy to feed pugs all this “people” food? I am researching because I just recently received a new Brindle Pug mix and he wont eat his pup food for anything! His big brother( which is not really his brother but a full pug) has no problem eating his doggie food… but I’m starting to wonder if he’s overweight? HELP PLEASE!!!

I’m Winston (named after the old Nascar Winston Cup Series!) and I love my Hill’s Science Diet Dog Food...mommy tried giving me carrots once....didn’t quite take to them, I don’t know what they are, they don’t taste like dog food...Mommy is nervous about giving me anything other than dog food after she spent Xmas night at the vet with me after I ate wallpaper...I think she wants to give me apples...any advice from anyone for my mom?

Hi Winston,

Benjamin, Henry & Luna eat apples all the time.  It is one of their favorite foods.  I wouldn’t eat too much at first as it might be a shock to your system, but as far as we know apples aren’t bad for pugs.

Winston

Thanks Benjamin, Harry & Luna for your advice, I’m looking forward to trying out these new apple “treats”

The only “human” food I eat is carrots, I actually like them now! apples (as a special treat when I’m really good!), lettuce (I like to play with it) & a bit of vanilla yogurt (my fave) - I’m not a picky eater however, I don’t think mommy likes to give me human food - she finds it’s too processed and even she has trouble digesting it sometimes. I’ll stick with my puppy food, better be safe than sorry…
