Baby Benny’s Pugkin Bread Recipe

Benjamin, Henry & Luna waiting to eat pugkin bread

Ann was kind enough to send over her pugkin bread recipe for me to share.  So without further ado, here it is!

  • ½ c. unbleached all purpose flour
  • ½ c. whole wheat flour
  • ½ c. buckwheat flour
  • ½ c. old-fashioned oatmeal
  • 1 T. baking powder
  • 1 t. cinnamon
  • ¼ t. salt
  • ¼ t. nutmeg
  • ¼ t. ginger
  • 1 can pumpkin
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 T. flaxseed
  • 2 T. wheat germ
  • ½ c. milk
  • 2 T. plain yogurt
  • ¾ c. unsweetened applesauce

Blend ingredients and spoon into prepared (greased and floured) pans.  I use three small loaf pans…or you can use one large loaf pan.  Bake at 350 degrees for about 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the loaf comes out clean.  Cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then remove loafs to a rack and cool completely.  Serves three hungry pugs….or one Benny.

Note:  This is a very flexible recipe…you can add or subtract here and there to suit the tastes and food sensibilities of your pugs.  If they have allergies to milk or eggs, for example, add more applesauce to moisten the recipe.  I sometimes add a little more oatmeal (love that fiber!), adding just a touch more yogurt or milk for additional liquids.  Oh, and if the pugs will share, this is perfectly suitable for humans, particularly if you are trying to cut down on sugar in your diet.  One more note…I make my own applesauce for this recipe, and I make it using unpeeled apples.  More fiber and vitamins to boot!

I love Benny’s expression.  He seems to have entered into a zen-like zone of concentration waiting for the okay to dive in.  Also, it’s very cute the way his little feet show under the plate!

Ann, thanks for figuring it out so you could share, and OBP, thanks for blogging it with another cute pic of the trio.

Just a little FYI, This Sunday is the Feast of St. Francis (who’s been in way too many posts recently :-( ).  There are many organizations hosting a “Blessing of the Animals” in conjunction with their celebrations.  I know in NYC, we have at LEAST 3, most with extra stuff for the animals. grin

Have a great weekend all.

LOL Martha…

And thank you Ann (and Corrine for posting) for sharing…You’ve made many a pug very happy!  I, too, will be shopping for ingredients this weekend.

I had a harrowing and heartbreaking morning (not pug related, but animal/animal lover related)...so, thank you Carla, for sharing the info about the St. Francis celebration as I will be sure to look up if there’s anything for us to contribute to this weekend.

And, without taking up the whole blog with my long winded sad story, if everyone could say an extra prayer to St. Francis for the peace of my new angel baby, Gracie, I’d appreciate it.

God bless all the afflicted animals and the folks that love them and care so much!  We are the ones they look to for comfort and thankfully, OBP is a place we can all comfort each other, with a pug or other furry child!  Love and peace to all those struggling with these issues!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Thanks for the link - we don’t have canned pumpkin so will buy fresh and am going to have to search for buckwheat flour (not heard of this before).  Will try to experiment this weekend. Have a great Easter over there smile
