Lakeside Stroll

Henry

Despite the fact that Henry can not see, he has been enjoying his walks. We have been walking him around the neighborhood each evening and getting him used to certain navigation cues. As he has been getting better and better walking on the leash, we have been venturing out to some of our favorite parks.

Last weekend, we enjoyed a leisurely walk around the lake. Henry loved getting out and smelling all the smells. So many trees, so little time!

Breaking the Rules

Henry

New Year's eve was pretty rainy here in FL. And it seems the crappier the weather the more inclined we are to go to the beach. But, we did something a little different this trip. Usually, we go to the dog beach. This is a special area that dogs are allowed to be on. The rest of the beach is off limits for dogs. However, during the offseason, I frequently see dogs on the beach outside of the designated dog area. Being that is was a crappy weather day, we decided that we would go to the people stretch of the beach and just take a little drive (driving is allowed on the beach here). We figured that Henry could ride with his head out the window and soak up some of the salty sea air.

When we drove on the beach, it was bare. Not another car or person in sight. It was awesome! We had the whole beach to ourselves! Henry had his head out the window and was sniffing and looking at the rough sea. We drove for a bit and then we decided that since we were the only ones on the beach we would let Henry out for a short walk. He had a blast getting his feet wet in the surf and trotting along the beach. We only had our feet and paws in the sand for a bit because it was raining, but when we got back in the car, we had one happy pug on our hands!

By Way of the Holiday Lights

Henry

Henry does not see very well. His vision during the day is one thing, but he really struggles at night. The biggest problem we have right now is that by the time we get home from work, it is pretty much already dark. Which makes his evening walks super challenging.

However, I think we have found a temporary solution. One of our favorite local parks always lights the trees that line the sidewalks. The decorative lights give off just enough light to help Henry be able to navigate things better. So the last few nights we have been driving to the park, then taking a small walk by the light of the Christmas lights. The best part is that this also gets Henry a little car ride!

When the holidays are over, we might also have a backup plan for lighting Henry's evening walks. We noticed that the field lights on the soccer fields light up not only the field, but a large portion of the sidewalk. So, I think we might become the biggest rec league fans and be at the fields to take Henry for a walk at every game.

Sandspurs

Luna

Every time we took Luna to the beach, she inevitably ended up with at least one sandspur stuck in her paw. (Her first trip to the beach might be an exception. Honestly, I don't remember much else after she took home most of the sand on the beach in her eyes.)

I don't know what it was about her that made her a sandspur magnet. The boys would run and play on the same beach and not getting any of the evil sandspurs stuck in their paws.

Henry

However, that all changed on our last trip to the beach. On Sunday, Henry got not only one, but two sandspurs stuck in his paw! I guess someone needs to carry on the sand spur tradition.

Weekend Adventure - Sunday Edition

Henry

On Sunday we decided to venture out to a nearby park that has awesome hiking trails. We hadn't been to this park in years so we thought Henry might really enjoy it. Plus, Henry has always loved to take walks through woodsy areas and these trails definitely fit the bill.

On our way out to the car, we realized that it was a lot more humid than we originally thought. Henry, humidity and long walks don't always go well together. We almost scrapped our trip, but we thought, Henry would be able to take a short walk on the trails. Plus, Henry had a big day at the beach the day before, so he wouldn't be up for too long of a walk anywhere we went.

As soon as we parked the car, Henry was happy to be on his old favorite trails. As predicted, we only took a short jaunt on the trails, but Henry was one happy pug!

Weekend Adventure - Saturday Edition

Henry

Saturday was a pretty dreary day by Florida standards. It was raining off and on and was quite windy. With the so, so weather, we thought it would be a great day to take a little trip to the beach wink

The great thing about going to the beach when the weather is less than ideal is that we pretty much have the entire beach to ourselves. And this visit proved no different than our other crappy weather beach days.

Henry didn't care what the weather was like. He was happy to feel the sand between his paws. He walked the entire dog beach section and since it was low tide we were able to trek to a part of the beach that we aren't able to access very often. That was his favorite part, of course. It was his big moment to stray off the beaten path.

Considering that it was windy on the mainland, it was super windy on the beach. I think this big gust of wind almost blew Henry over! It was a warm breeze though so that helped.

King of the Hill

Henry

On Henry's Sunday adventure he conquered this big hill. Which says a lot because it is really hard to find hills in Florida.

In case you can't spot Henry in the first picture here is a closer look.

Henry

What was Henry's favorite part of climbing up this big hill? That it was off the path. Henry isn't much to sticking to the beaten path. He'd much rather blaze his own trail.
