What’s in a name?

I came across an interesting article in USA Today about how the most popular names for dogs are names that have more of a human ring to it.  Using their list of insured pets, Veterinary Pet Insurance came up with the top ten names of male and female dogs.  The top three names for each gender are listed below.

Male

  1. Max
  2. Buddy
  3. Rocky

Female

  1. Bella
  2. Molly
  3. Lucy

So why have dog lovers ditched the traditional names like Spot and Buddy.  Many believe it has to do with pets being more and more apart of our family.  I tend to agree.  Afterall, my boys are named Benjamin and Henry.  And if we got to name Luna she would have had a more traditional human name too.

Pug dog collars to be auctioned off for $3,000

When dog collars are part of lot that will be auctioned off for $3,000 at Bonhams in New York, it is pretty easy to tell that these aren’t any ordinary pug collars.  No, these collars once were worn by the pugs owned by the Duke and Dutchess of Windsor.  There are over 100 leather collars that are lavishly engraved.  You can see a picture of one of the collars here.

Pug Nurses Husky Puppies

Peaches, a new mother to one pug puppy, recently had her family expand when a litter of Husky puppies were brought to a veterinarian clinic to be euthanized.  A worker at the clinic convinced the owner to surrender the Husky puppies instead of having them euthanized.  Peaches, the lovable pug, then took over part of the nursing duties and is making sure the Husky puppies are well cared for.

Watch a video of peaches and the Husky puppies.

Kids & Dogs - New dog bite study

A new study about children and dog bites has been released by Austrian researchers. The study finds that the number of dog bites decreases with a child’s age and that children 1 year old and younger are the most likely to be bitten. It seems that children of this age are much more likely to unknowingly aggravate a dog. The researchers also found that the most likely breeds to bite were German Shepherds and Dobermans.
