First, I want to apologize for not updating you all before now. I hope no one was worried....
Second, I want to warn those that have a weak stomach not to scroll all the way down as I have included the before & after photos from Benny's procedure. In the photos you will see that his teeth were yucky in the before pick and cleaned up in the after shot. But the squeamish part is where it is clear to see that he is intubated. If that will make you nervous to see, don't peek.
So, Benjamin had his dental cleaning and it really went a lot better than I had hoped for! Since I know how anxious he gets and so as to shorten the length of time that he had a rumbly in his tummy (to quote Winnie the Pooh) I had asked if he could be first. This was indeed possible. I had to drop him around 7:30 AM. By 9:30 AM I was already getting the phone call saying that he was in recovery. Wow! That was quick! I was so happy to have it be all done that early in the day.
They shared that they had to remove 3 teeth altogether. As you can see below. One was pretty discolored and the other two were causing problems since his gums had receded to expose the nerves. So, out they had to come. I am not sure who has had to have more teeth pulled (or have naturally fallen out) Ben or Luna. I think at this point it is really too close to call. Henry hasn't needed to have hardly any teeth (if any at all) come out. I truly think that it has something to do with the size of the pug. Since Henry is bigger and has a larger head, I think that helps accommodate the teeth in his mouth. The smaller the head, the more compressed the teeth have to be in that little noggin. They all start with the same number of teeth right? Makes sense to me, but I am no vet. (I merely play one at home.)

The most wonderful thing about this experience this time is how easily Benjamin came out of the anaesthetic. When they called me at 9:30 they said he was already alert an looking around. Then they called again around 1:00 and they were like, uh, Benny's ready to go home! (Pick up time is typically 3:30-4) but it sounded like he was already bouncing off the walls! I was happy that he all awake and bubbly but I was still working. Yikes! But what better excuse to have to leave for a short day than to take care of my Baby Benny.

You may be wondering what the heck Luna is eating out of, but before you think we have officially lost our minds let me explain. This is our version of a raised feeder for Luna. I know, there are plenty of raised feeders out there and I'm sure I could find a few if I spent less time shopping for dog begs, but I have looked for feeders for Luna and haven't found any that fit her needs.
With Luna's neck issues, she does't like to bend down to eat from a bowl on the floor. So, we need some sort of a bowl that is angled that allows her to eat with minimal strain on her neck. The feeders we have looked at have either been too tall or too low or don't have the right angle. So, we went about creating one ourselves. It isn't aesthetically pleasing, but it gets the job done.

Everyone knows I have a thing for dog beds and I know a few of you have wondered exactly how many dog beds we have in the house. So, I counted them up this weekend and came up with 20. Not bad. That is less than 7 dog beds per pug.
If you break it down by rooms, my office comes in first with a total of 7 beds. When I worked from home those were 7 very much used dog beds. The living room has the next highest tally at 5. The pugs use those beds a lot when we watch TV in the evenings. The rest of the beds are around the house. 3 of the beds are also used in the pugs' crates (1 in each crate).
There are also two dog beds that are out of the rotation. One is the orthopedic dog bed that we bought for Sol. Solsey didn't really like the bed and Benjamin, Henry and Luna never liked it either so it is tucked away and not currently in use. The other bed not in use is small orthopedic bed for Luna's crate. She was not pleased when we put that bed in her crate so we took it out and put something a bit more comfortable in there for her.
Much to a lot of people's surprise, all the beds are used. If we get a bed and it isn't used, we will usually try a different spot in the house. If it still isn't used we will give it away to a friend. And over the years, we have had to throw a few beds out because the pugs had completely worn them out.
While a lot of the beds are on the floor, there are some beds that are strategically placed. Take my office for example. 3 of the beds in that room are on top of ottomans. The pugs like to be up higher in my office so that they were closer to my desk.
After breaking it down and looking at things this way, I think we need more dog beds.

The teeth in Benjamin's mouth are packed in such a way that they make an elaborate set of nooks and crannies that make keeping his teeth clean a nightmare. So, today he is going in to get a thorough dental cleaning. Sadly, I know at least two teeth are going to need to be pulled and I am keeping my fingers crossed that no others will need to be extracted.
We picked up some baby food so Benny will have something soft to eat when he gets home this evening. I know he will be anxious to eat once he gets settled back at home. I can't wait to have him home, eating his baby food and resting up on his pile of pillows.

The pugs and I are very happy that football is back. I love watching the Raven games and the pugs love that football gets them at least 3 hours of couch time. And sometimes if they're lucky snacks. What could be better than that?

So, I was out shopping last weekend, when I saw a display labeled as "Massive Pet Beds". Of course I couldn't resist brining one home for the pugs. Its weird, people always look at you funny when you are wheeling around a dog bed that is bigger than your shopping cart. I had a few people ask what kind of dog I had. I got a lot of laughs when I said pug.
