Chewing on a Saturday Afternoon

Sol chewing her knucklebone

The last few times we have been to Publix to get knucklebones for the pugs they have been out.  This hasn’t gone over with the pugs very well.  Then I remembered that there was a new shop at the farmer’s market that had knucklebones when we were there late last year.  So on Saturday, we went to farmer’s market and got lots of fruits, veggies & knucklebones.  Turns out that the knucklebones were buy 5 get one free, so of course we went for the deal to have a few extras stashed away.  The knucklebones at Publix are nice, but the knucklebones from the farmer’s market were huge!  Needless to say the pugs were delighted!

We always get a bone for Sol, but she generally never chews it.  Instead, she vacuums up all the little pieces that the other three leave on their towels.  But, Saturday, Sol was ready to tackle her very own knucklebone.  She worked so hard chewing on that bone that she had to stop and take a nap!  Which worked out good because it was time to put the bones away for the night.  Benjamin would chew on them forever and I don’t like the pugs to get too much of a good thing in one day.  I imagine all that “yummy stuff” they pull off the new bones could really wreak havoc on the digestive system.

Here are some pics of the others going to town chewing.

All About Chewing

Henry chewing

Last week Darci & Abbey the pug wrote in wondering about chewing.  Abbey loves to chew and Darci was wondering if all pugs are avid chewers.  Three out of the four of my gang love to chew.  How about your pugs?  Do they like to chew and if so what is their favorite type of bone.

Looking forward to hearing all about the chewing habits of the pugs out there in OBP land grin

The Forever Bone

Luna has a very odd way of chewing.  She doesn’t really chew a bone, she mainly gums it.  Its hard to explain, so check out the video below.  Also, we have bought small rawhide bones just for her and she refuses to chew them.  She wants the kind that the boys get.

Bully Sticks

Benjamin, Henry & Luna with their bully sticks

A few week’s ago, Mike from Best Bully Sticks sent over a few bully sticks for Benjamin, Henry and Luna to enjoy.  The boys and Luna each love to chew and we usually give them a new bone on Sundays for them to work on while we unwind and watch TV and get ready for the work week.  Yesterday, we gave the pugs each their own bully stick and they went to town!

Thanks, Mike for sending over the yummy treats!

Sweet Spot

Henry & his knucklebone

These knucklebones must be pretty yummy for Henry to give up part of his bed so that the bone may rest comfortably.  This particular bone is one of the rejects.  Meaning, on the night the knucklebones were given out, this was not the one bone chosen by the pugs that they all wanted to chew.  So, it will sit, untouched for days until someone starts chewing on it and makes it interesting enough for all the pugs.  In the meantime, Henry is being a hospitable host.  Yesterday, when I walked by the bone was in the center of the pillow and Henry was sleeping between the wall and the pillow!  Which of course made me shake my head because Henry will give up his bed for a bone, but won’t budge for me when I need him to scoot over a bit so I can get my whole body on the bed at night.  The boy obviously doesn’t know where his pumpkin bread is buttered.

Unraveled

Henry and the rawhide

I spent most of the weekend working on the calendar, so the pugs had lots of chewing time this weekend.  They had nice new knucklebones to keep them busy while I worked, but their chewing reminded me of something I wanted to blog about awhile back.

Henry has a thing with compressed rawhide bones.  Instead of just chewing them, he likes to peel the rawhide off in layers.  Unfortunately, he is quite good at it too!  As he peels away the layers, I take them away because they are what we call “choking hazards”.

Benjamin hates it when Henry unravels a rawhide bone.  Benjamin’s preferred plan of attack is to get the bone so slobbery on an end that it pretty much turns to mush.

Depending on the size of the rawhide strip that Henry pulls off, we sometimes let Luna chew on it.  Luna has such a tiny mouth that she couldn’t even come close to getting the larger pieces into her mouth.  She will happily chew for hours on a piece of rawhide that we had to take away from Henry.

On a completely different note, how is everyone that was in Ike’s path doing?  I hope everyone is OK.

The Switch

Henry chewing

Whenever I get the pugs a bone or something to chew I always buy three of whatever it is.  That way each pug has their own bone.  I could probably get away with only getting one though.  When I first give each of the pugs their bone, they all run off to chew.  After a few minutes of chewing, the amount of time varies depending on the type of bone I give them, Benjamin, Henry & Luna all become interested in one bone and take turns chewing the same bone.  One of them will chew for a bit, then go to get a drink of water and then one of the other pugs will take their turn.  This process repeats usually until it is time for bed.  Benjamin & Henry have been doing this since they were pups.  Now it takes a bit longer to get their turn since little Luna came along.  But it can’t bother them too much because I always maintain a one bone per pug ratio.  They just choose not to chew it.  Silly pugs!
